Allow me to take you on a little trip.
It's Mid-January 2008, and I am standing on the hills overlooking
Jerusalem. My mind races, as just 5 days before I was lying on a Hospital bed undergoing Heart Surgery in Portland , Oregon, and my mind was busy dreaming of what I was now experiencing !
To my right is my dear friend Jonny ( Jonathan), my Tour Guide/Historian and Host. On my left is my Archeologist Brother Alan, busy taking photographs.
I am busy listening to Jonny, looking at The Wall, The Valleys etc, and all the Hills, and peering over Alan's shoulder at what he is finding so worthy and interesting. THEN....
I, Fred Gordon, this stuttering little boy from South Boston, is transported to Biblical times, here, standing on this hill with spiritual giants ,Moses and Caleb, and I am seeing through the eyes of Moses. ( I usually see myself in a supporting role...as in a previous life...you know, the ones people usually speak of...well, there I was the one charged with ‘mucking out the Horse-stalls' for Prince What's-his-name !) But here I am with Moses, on a sunny day on a Hill . In this glimpse / gift I have, Moses and I are on Mount Sinai. As the Biblical account goes "God had revealed Himself to Moses, and there was an instant when God's back was to Moses (an Anthropomorphism) as God passed in front of Moses, and just for a moment, Moses saw through God's eyes"!
WOW! I also saw Jerusalem through Alan's eyes and heard the hustle and bustle and tasted the air through the words of Jonny. "WHEW! From near death one week to an almost Uketastrophe, a true mountain-top experience, that lasted, and carried me through the three weeks of Teaching and Sharing , helping tpeople stretch, Cry, laugh, heal and eat, and even learn Chi Gung and Taoist Longevity Breathing. Did I mention eating ?
"Seeing through fresh eyes", seeing through God's eyes, Buddhas eyes, the Eyes of Jizo...
Most of my life I have been privileged to only help people cry, and now I had experienced seeing the world through Gods eyes, seeing all the people God Loves through Her very eyes.
Master Baek entreated me to "see everyone as BUDDHA !
This purifies the mind of ignorance and arrogance, he said."
Last summer, dealing with health-problems, I attended Kamp Kumar. I had an opportunity to speak with Master Frantzis one-on-one, and I said, "I do not feel that the Compassion I have is expressing itself to others. What shall I do" ? His response was "Dwell in stillness, slow down and seek to understand what it is that is blocking the Compassion from expressing"!
Now I realize glimpses as I occasionally see life and the world through Gods eyes, Jizo's eyes, Kuan Yin's eyes, the Eyes of Love and Compassion, that actually care...
Through these eyes, I view my life; through these eyes I look at my family, and I see my heart expand.
My Brother who lives in Colorado, wishes to be "so filled with Love, that anyone who crosses even his shadow will be healed"!
I wish to be so open, that the scales fall-off my eyes and heart, and I can capture the vision as well as the sight, seeing the World through the eyes of The Creative and Sustaining Power of the Universe / God .
I was once asked "what is the Best Advice / I responded , KEEP GOING !
Well then, "what is the Best Practice ?... "COMPASSION"!
Compassion is from the Sanskrit , "KARUNA", 'which is our ability to relate to another in so intense a measure that the plight of the other affects us as much as if it had been our own.
Within this word Compassion/Karuna, we find "RU", which means
"to weep". The actual root-meaning of "Karuna" is : "The anguished cry of deep sorrow and understanding that can only come from an unblemished sense of oneness with others".
Allow me to end with the words of Geshe Namgyal Wangchen:
"If we single-pointedly practice great compassion, then with little effort, we will be able to gain all other virtues"!
Seeing through fresh-eyes...
Fred
