Experiences with Taoist Yoga

These days we've become inundated with the different forms of yoga available and most of us by now have heard about the benefits of yoga but don't know where to start. Hatha yoga, Vinyasa yoga, Restorative yoga, Yin yoga - the list goes on. Obviously, a good way to find any practice is to try different classes and instructors and determine what ultimately resonates within you. Taoist Yoga, with its origins rooted in ancient China as a way to prepare the mind and body for Taoist meditation, is now available to us in the West and should also be considered when seeking out a practice. In the first Taoist Yoga blog, instructor Katie Keane briefly discusses the origins and a few principles of Taoist Yoga. To give us more understanding of what it's all about, I recently interviewed a few students who've been attending weekly Taoist Yoga classes.

When teaching Taoist Yoga, I'll occasionally notice a few students, especially hatha yoga students, experiencing difficulty in the initial stages of the practice. As a practitioner and teacher of hatha yoga myself, I've started to investigate where and why this is happening. First I'll acknowledge that not all hatha yoga practices and practitioners are the same; there are many branches of yoga available with students of varying levels of expertise and commitment. The experiences mentioned in this blog are just that; my own personal experiences that I've recently encountered.

What exactly is Taoist Yoga?
Taoist Yoga originated in Ancient China as a way to prepare the mind and body for Taoist meditation. Taoist Yoga focuses on developing and maintaining an awareness of the flow of breath and chi in the body - with this awareness the practitioner uses simple postures and breathing techniques to release blockages and strengthen the flow of chi in the body.
