Tai Chi is commonly referred to as Moving meditation. Tai chi’s slow, graceful movements provide relaxed focus, quiet down internal conversations (the monkey mind) and engender a deep sense of relaxation that helps release inner tensions.

Tai chi enhances deeper awareness. In the Taoist tradition, these qualities are only a bridge to Taoist meditation.

    Taoism: Relaxing Into Your Being

In the Taoist tradition, the spiritual path goes beyond having health and a calm, peaceful mind. The highest purpose of Taoist meditation is to make you aware of the permanent, unchanging center of your being, that place of spirit and Emptiness that is Consciousness itself. This level is beyond mere physical and mental relaxation; rather it is relaxing into your soul or your very being.

Transforming Tai Chi into Taoist Meditation

Only a few tai chi masters know how to transform the practice of tai chi to a complete Taoist moving meditation. Bruce's teacher, Liu Hung Chieh, taught me that tradition and empowered me to teach it. The chapter, 'Tai Chi and Spirituality" in Tai Chi: Health for Life discusses this tradition in detail.

There are many forms of meditation in the world. Bruce is specifically a lineage holder in the Water Method tradition of Taoist meditation derived from the teachings of Lao Tse.
The original intent of yoga was to achieve stillness in the body and mind as the necessary foundation for meditation. Yoga was primarily developed to help students maintain a comfortable sitting posture. In fact, the Sanskrit term asana literally means "seat"—the way in which your body rests on the ground when you meditate.
