Sometimes it can take a setback to wake you up to what is valuable and what isn't. I had been fighting an intense legal battle with devastating effects on my business and on my health. I had to face starting over again very late in life. I couldn't do much about the drain on my time and money; however, I could do something about the drain on my health. Thank God for qigong!
hi MS
that's a big question.
on some level, the tan tien is an area, or field. on another level, there's also for sure a point, located on the central channel, about 1-2 inches (approx) below the belly button. This is what bruce has taught, and that's my experience as well.
when I practice storing chi, I use both. it feels to me that I bring the chi into the tan tien area, or the lower abdominal cavity, and then when I get it to really store, it feels like it's vanishing into a point.. when you are moving from the lower tan tien, such as in taiji, all of the abdominal tissue seems involved, but you have to be moving from the center point for it to work well, it seems.
the way I can tell im in my lower tan tien is this:: there's a much greater sense of 3 dimensionality to my awareness when im focused on lower tan tien. when im in my head, it's more like im seeing 2d (out of my eyes) not 3d (getting info from all the nerves?). It first happened at bruce meditation, this sensation of "seeing" from lower tan tien and it was striking. id love to hear if others have had similar experiences, or how people have experienced it.
so id ask, what is your experience of it? the real trick, it seems, is to get past the academic definition and find it so you can start working with it.
hope this helps, and again, id love to hear what other folks have experienced
be well
