Ive been using the Taoist Breathing Cds in my meditations for awhile now and Ive done the TMC in the past.
Im curious as to the thoughts and images that I observe. Im having trouble invoking emotions through breathing into my organs but I have a feeling that the thoughts are attached to an emotion that Im having trouble detecting.
Some of the thoughts are unresolved issues that could be classified under “unpleasant” and so Im wondering whether these may constitute as a blockage to be resolved.

If this is so, should I aim to focus my attention and intention on the energy of these thoughts or the golden thread attached to them?

I feel like communicating these experiences in a message is challenging but Id love to hear insights of those who are perhaps learning from the breathing cd’s and/or inner dissolving and have something to share.

    Cheers,

    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

I’d recommend the following approach. When you have a disturbing or unpleasant thought, try to feel your body. Scan your body downward from the top of your head and look for “active” sensations. Perhaps it was an anxious thought. Maybe you’ll notice that your shoulders feel tight, or your back starts to hurt. Maybe your stomach feels quesy. Maybe your heart aches.

Then try to inner dissolve the energies that you’ve found.

I’ve found that this approach has worked really well for me. The more disturbing or painful the original thought, the more benefit I’ve gained from dissolving the energies related to that thought. It’s amazing how painful certain thoughts can be. And it’s equally amazing how after a couple of months of meditation, you can come to peace with that very same thought.

Always follow the 70% rule, if things get too overwhelming, then stop and back off. Try again another day! =)

    Hope this helps,
    Janak

I figured I’d use this thread for this conundrum.
I think I’m at a stage where I can’t perceive the difference between inner and outer dissolving; there is a kind of lack of sense of direction, in that, moving inward or outward seem conceptually and perceptively the same. Is this good or bad? what should I be aiming for?
It’s damn frustrating because it hits me in the red-dust; makes me feel I’m doing something wrong and should just give-up.

    Hey Cody,

I can relate to your frustration and your thoughts of giving up. I’ve experianced both many many times =)

Inner Dissolving (ID) and Outer Dissolving (OD) should feel very different. The first stage is the same. “Ice to water”. You learn to feel a block in your body and then you keep paying attention to it. It starts to relax and become less and less tense. This feels the same in ID and OD.

The second stage feels completely different. In OD this stage is called “water to gas”. With OD you want to get the feeling of the energy of the block dissapating out from your skin. Like the energy of the block is getting less and less dense and almost evaporating off of your skin. You want the feeling of this energy going out 1 inch from your skin, then 2 inches, then 3 inches. All the way out to 3 feet. The farther you can let it go the more powerful the effect of your outer dissolving.

At the beginning, I couldn’t feel this at all. At that stage, I found it helpful to visualize that it was happening.

With ID, the second stage is “water to inner space”. With ID there is no sense that energy is leaving the body. There is no sense that energy is expanding outwards. Instead, it almost feels like energy is gently seeping inwards. Energy is seeping into the block. It’s a hard to describe feeling.

It’s definitely much easier to get this feeling when training with Bruce in person. If you ever get the chance to attend an event where he is teaching meditation or inner dissolving. I highly recommend it! =)

    How-do Janak,

    Thanks again for the help.
I think I do experience, and have always experienced the sense of OD’s water to gas, but I tend to start getting extremely itchy; like destructively itchy!
I don’t know if this is a distraction or a sublimation that tries to make the process more felt and real, but it has been a pretty constant problem since I was very young (my dad, who doesn’t even practice meditation [consciously, I suppose ;-)] gets this too, though not as severe, as does his mom).
Not sure whether I’m meant to ride-out the itching or what, it gets very, very bad indeed.
I think I sense now how I’ve been misinterpreting water to inner space, as being a feeling of attack or vulnerability-of-sorts; the term “energy seeping in” can certainly give the ego the willies! But I think I can start going with it now, hopefully.
I’d want nothing more than to train in meditation with Bruce, hope he does something local to LA in the near-future!
As always, extremely helpful Janak; thank you.

    Cody
