    Hello

I am struggling with some deterioration in my knee. I bought a book on Qi Gong and cannot do the vast majority of the exercises based on the form specified due to my knee. Doc is projecting that I will need eventual knee replacement surgery. I was told in the past that I’ll also need shoulder surgery, but successfully avoided that through exercises, so I’m a believer in surgery as a last resort. Exercises that the sports med people suggested made things worse not better, as did attempting to do some of the Qi Gong exercises. I’m done with cardio at this point, so it isn’t very good. I am trying to identify some of the best knowledge sources, such as books or DVDs for healing my knee. There aren’t any Qi Gong instructors in my area, so that isn’t an option. Any thoughts?

Also, any advice on the best general Qi Gong DVDs or books?

    HI Joe,

I would recommend having a look at Dragon and Tiger Medical Qigong. It can be done sitting down or lying down and learning to move Qi through your legs should help.

Learning to pulse your joints would also be useful but you can’t learn that from a video. If you can find a nearby instructor in the EA database – http://www.energyarts.com/instructors – that knows the Marriage of Heaven and Earth or Circling Hands they should be able to help you out. Some instructors do Skype training sessions which can be enough to get you going.

You could also sign up for one of the Energy Arts Training Circle programs – http://www.energyarts.com/store/products/category/membership. They contain a wealth of information that you could use once you have worked with an instructor.

    Best of luck

Thanks Trevor. I will look into the Dragon & Tiger medical Qi Gong. Getting an instructor to Skype might be a worthwhile venture also.

    Hi Trevor

I’ve just joined the site. I was wanted to investigate doing an on line course of Dragon and Tiger, I read someone said Bill Ryan did an online course but I don’t see anywhere if can check out cost duration etc.

I have been doing Dragon and Tiger with a tutor but the training is so inconsistent only once a month and on occasion that monthly class has been cancelled because not enough attendance. I’ve done about 7 2 hour sessions and have gone through the 7 moves but not don the transitions or energy pathways.

Or do you think just learning from the dvd and book would be adequate?

    Many thanks

    Jay

    Hi Jay,

    I’ve just seen your comment.

Hmmm, it looks like EA have withdrawn the D&T online program from the store for now. They might just be reorganizing things – the course page is still up here – http://www.energyarts.com/dragon-and-tiger-qigong-online-course so you could try signing up there. The cost is 3 x $39.95.

The DVDs are good, they are shot in a studio with Bruce providing the instructions and he does cover the transitions. You could certainly learn a lot from them.

The energy work is covered in detail in the second book.

In my experience anything you can do with a live instructor will always give you much more than you can get from a video or a book but something is better than nothing :-) If you do get the DVDs/Books/Online program you will have a great foundation for working on refinements with a teacher.

    Best wishes

Thanks Trevor I will check things out further.

Can I ask Trevor do you think it may be helpful to study the energy gates before studying D&T further?

    Thank you again

    Hi Jay,

energy gates and dragon and tiger have different goals :-)

Energy gates is part of the 5 Neigong sets that Bruce teaches (Energy Gates, Heaven and Earth, Spiraling Energy Body, Bend the Bow and Gods Playing in the Clouds) that together cover all aspects of internal work from martial arts and health to spiritual development.

Dragon and Tiger is Qigong set for health (and a very good one!).

Working with the gates would definitely improve D&T by helping you keep your alignments online as you go through the movements but it’s not necessary. D&T emphasizes moving qi through the acupuncture meridians rather than deeper channels and gates that the neigong work uses.

    Hope that helps

    Trevor
