Hi,
It recently struck me that TaiChi's Single Whip and Dragon and Tiger's move n°4 look very similar.
What is the link between those two moves ?
Are there also similarities at the level of Body Mechanics, Intent, Chi, etc ?
Sometimes it can take a setback to wake you up to what is valuable and what isn't. I had been fighting an intense legal battle with devastating effects on my business and on my health. I had to face starting over again very late in life. I couldn't do much about the drain on my time and money; however, I could do something about the drain on my health. Thank God for qigong!
All I know is that the joining of the fingers facilitates the chi of that hand circling back rather than extending out. At least that's what I've been told. You can make various assumptions from that I guess.
I liked the idea that each finger represents one of the Five Elements/Phases/Functions (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water).
Couldn't find Bruce's reference to that in the Manual--maybe I got it from his DVD.
When the fingers are connected the energies are united.
The hooked hand can be used to split open your opponent (I'm not a martial artist, but it's helpful to imagine this) or the beak can be used to peck critical points on the opponent. Of course, there are many other uses.
My favorite analogy comes from the Five Animal Sports where the bent wrist contains energy in the hand like a Deer's hoof. Usually we want to keep all joints open. But there are exceptions to everything in taiji and qigong.
My understanding is that in D & T your intent is to be pulling in and the wrist joints should be allowed to close. Also when a connection is there to the belly, bringing the five fingers together gets the guts to move more dramatically together and then apart.
In single whip the intent is to elongate out and strike with the back of the wrist, and one can bend a joint and have it be open or closed, in this case open. try on a bag or friend and strike with the bent wrist opened and closed, notice how each feels. I have found both to be very different.
Also notice the biceps in SW twist, elongate and coil and in DT has more of an open sunkeness to allow gushing and flow feeling.
Just my two cents
