Tai Chi Postures for Internal Lengthening

Brookline, MA

May 6 2012

When you first start learning Tai Chi, you work on not overstretching, following the 70% rule, and learning to move in a relaxed, soft way. People often wonder, "when do I really get to open up my body?" The answer is, ideally, after there is a good foundation with the external shape of the form and a good sense of your alignments.

There are several techniques for lengthening the body internally so as to make more physical "space" in the body. One is the opening and closing of the joints and cavities, such as in the Marriage of Heaven and Earth. There is also lengthening the soft tissue such as the muscles, fascia, and tendons.

In the Short Form, there are 7 postures that can teach you how to find this feeling of lengthening:

  • Single Whip
  • Diagonal Flying
  • Hold the Ball
  • White Cranei Spreads its Wings
  • Fan through the Back
  • Apparent Close Up
  • Leopard & Tiger Spring to Mountain

The secret to finding length in all these postures is that you hold one part of your body fixed, while the rest of your body stretches by moving away from or around the fixed point. While learning to lengthen internally from these moves of the form, you also improve your proprioception.

You have to be relaxed and comfortable with these moves in order to try this more sophisticated technique, so we recommend that you've gone through Level 2 Bend and Release classes before you try it.

In this one-day workshop, Senior Instructor Eric Peters will help you find the internal lengthening in each of these postures. Eric will also discuss how to find subtle points in other moves and carry the sense of continuous lengthening into the entire Short Form.

Testimonials

In November 2009 I was lucky to attend The Chi Rev Workout workshop in Basel Switzerland with Bruce. There I learned D&T movement 1, 4 and 5 and began practicing on a regular basis.

Since then - the really great thing is - that I do not suffer from springtime pollen allergies anymore. This is my 3rd year allergy free.

Recently I completed the online D&T course and I am now able to perform the full set of seven movements with ease.
