Taoist Water Method Meditation Retreat Presence & Inner Dissolving Practices

8 July 2012 - 28 July 2012

For the first time, Bruce Frantzis is offering a 3-week summer retreat on the meditation practices of the Taoist Water Method as transmitted to him by Taoist Lineagei Master Liu Hung Chieh of Beijing, China.

You will learn and practice the meditation tradition within Taoism that goes back thousands of years and is directly linked to the teachings of Lao Tse (Laozi), author of the Tao Te Ching (Dao De Jing).

This Taoist meditation tradition moves you toward stillness, becoming aware of what changes and what is ever-permanent, balance, letting go and using full effort without force--all perfect antidotes to the inbalances of our modern times. Join us to transform your life and inner world.

Price: $4995 (Lodging and full board included in price, see Payment Details below (blue box) for more information; attendance is limited because of lodging space so register early). Price after May 1st: $5395

The World of Taoist Meditation

The Taoist Meditation tradition is relevant to the needs of the computer age. It helps people resolve and come to terms with many of the human condition’s basic spiritual questions:

  • Why am I here?
  • What is the nature of spirituality?
  • How can I overcome the conditionings of childhood and become emotionally and spiritually mature?
  • How can I resolve my spiritual, psychic and emotional pain?
  • How can I come to terms with death and dying?

The aim at the beginning states of Taoist meditation is to develop an awareness of subtle energy in your body and to maintain that awareness. Foundational skills include proper alignments, breathing, concentration and staying present to what is inside you.

This meditation retreat will focus on helping you cultivate all of these skills so that you can develop a lifetime practice. By spending necessary time at this important stage you will make your meditation practice productive and fruitful into the future.

As your practice progresses, you begin to attain deeper layers of inner stillness and to become aware of Universal Consciousnessi. The core practice at this stage is Taoist inner dissolving which you can practice in five modalities: sitting, standing, moving, lying down or in partner exercises. You learn to let go and develop more spontaneity in your life. The benefits at this stage include gaining emotional harmony and releasing structural blockages, traumas, and fixations in your emotional, mental and psychic bodies.

What You’ll Learn at this Meditation Retreat

Take a journey into your inner world with an authentic Taoist Water Method Meditation tradition.

During this course you learn specific inner tools that are necessary to unleash the potential transformative qualities of meditation. Each day you'll be given new Taoist Presence Practices so you can be more conscious and present.

This course will train you to embody the basics which underpin all major methods of meditation such as awareness and presence with relaxed, smooth and open continuous inner focus. This course is also the foundation for all practices within the Taoist Water Tradition including the Inner Dissolving meditation methods which build on and extend the Presence Practices.

You will be shown how to:

  • Recognize what’s subliminally happening inside you. This helps you become better able to consciously understand and navigate many of the glitch points normally found during most practitioners’ meditative experience.
  • Acquire necessary meditation skills including proper breathing and sitting alignments.
  • Stay present by reducing and overcoming the involuntary tendency toward both distraction and spacing out. This involves three phases.
    • Recognizing if and how you become distracted.
    • Pulling back from the brink of becoming either fully distracted or spacing out.
    • After you tip over into distraction or dissociation, how in the shortest time you can again return to being present while meditating rather than remaining lost or disorientated.
  • Use meditative presence to supercharge the benefits of your tai chi, qigong or yoga practice.
  • Gain the ability when encountering subtle inner blockages to recognize, rather than ignore them. This is the necessary precursor to actual Taoist Inner Dissolving itself.
  • Explore deeper possibilities within the practice of Taoist Inner Dissolving.

This retreats starts with a one-week Presence Practices Intensive and then moves into more advanced subjects for those who have been invited to attend for all three weeks. A very small group of Bruce’s more experienced instructors will be training to teach the presence practices.

The Flow between Presence and Inner Dissolving

Presence Practices enable you to continuously feel the energies within you, including those that have become blocked, cloudy, or unbalanced in your body, mind and spirit. The Inner Dissolving Practices in turn then enable you to clear and resolve those energies so that you can become more free, clear, natural and balanced.

Generally within the tradition, one initially learns Presence Practices through Outer Dissolving Methods either moving or sitting before progressing onto Inner Dissolving. You cannot dissolve what you can’t feel and be present to. You can also learn presence through sitting meditation.

Yet, as with everything in the Taoist Water Method Tradition, these two phases of study (Presence and Dissolving) are not a linear progression but an ever-evolving circle of practice. The more you can become present or aware of the blocks within your body, emotions, mind and spirit, the more you can clear them. The more you can clear, the more that you can become further aware of what is deeper inside you.

During this meditation retreat Bruce will guide the group back and forth between the Presence and Inner Dissolving Practices, weaving them together as will best benefit the group.

Taoist Moving Meditation Practices

The meditation retreat will also increase your capacity to do Outer Dissolving Meditation (as explained in Relaxing into Your Being and The Great Stillness). You will learn how to integrate these outer dissolving techniques into other energy practices including:

  • Tai Chii, Baguai and Hsing-i
  • Qigongi
  • Yoga
  • Breathing

Integrating presense practices and dissolving in other energy arts transforms them into moving meditations. During the retreat, there will be self-lead sessions and groups in the morning and nights for you to practice your other energy arts. Attendance at these sessions is encouraged and will help you improve your sitting meditation.

Playing the Master Game

Before you can engage in any authentic meditation you first must learn how to use your mind and consciousness. The majority of the people in the world are easily distracted, unable to focus for an extended time period and unable to stay present to what is either outside or inside of them. This is a by-product of our modern consumer and technological age and few people ever go beyond their existing cultural programming.

Presence practices a effective and important. They enable you to move toward stress reduction and peace of mind. Rather than be controlled by outside forces, you make the decision to turn inward to become a master of your inner world. In the short term it leads to very practical applications such as:

  • Achieving goals
  • Being present in your relationships
  • Determining what is important and what is not
  • Seeing what is inside you
  • Finding your center and core
  • Bringing in more love, compassion and joy for yourself and others

Regardless if you have high spiritual aims, as you make the presence practices part of who you are, your life can start to change in a direction you desire.

In the long-term, once you develop these foundation presence skills you now have the base knowledge to engage in even deeper meditations. For some this will mean a inner drive to understand the great questions of life, to look at and resolve karma, to discover our true essence and to explore the universe and Tao.

Who knows how long the spiritual process takes. It could be one lifetime or thousands, but once on this path it becomes a prime directive in your being. You are now part of 'The Master Game' or "The Way" that mystics, yogis and meditators have played through time to realize what many have called enlightment, becoming conscious or simply knowing the Tao.

Event Structure

There are three ways to participate in this meditation retreat.

  • Track 1: Presence Practices Intensive (One week July 8-13)
  • Track 2: Presence Practices & Inner Dissolving Retreat - Invite Only (Full three weeks)
  • Track 3: Presence Practice Instructor Certification - Invite Only for Advanced Students (Full three weeks plus)

Bruce will teach everyone in attendance as a single group during this training. All will be given the same learning tools, techniques and transmissions that for many will take years of dedicated practice to unfold.

Invitations for Tracks 2 and 3 will be sent out on November 23, 2011.  If you do not receive an invitation for Track 2 or 3 and would like to be considered if space is available you may submit an application for Track 2 and 3 here.

Track 1 is available for purchase here.

Track 1: Presence Practices Retreat – 1 Week Training [30+ hours of instruction]

You will attend Track 1 if you want to develop the foundation skills to excel in any meditation practice, if you are committed to taking up a meditation practice in the future, and/or if you want to improve your existing practice. It is also a preliminary training for those who intend to follow the Taoist Water methodi meditation path in the future.

If you plan to attend Track 1, prepare for this training by completing the following before the course:

Limited spaces are available for Track 1, as preference will be given to those attending the full 3 weeks of retreat. Register before April 1, 2012 to receive the early discounted rate.

Track 2: Presence Practices & Inner Dissolving Retreat – 3 Week Training
[Certificate of Attendance--100 hours of instruction]

Students invited into Track 2 will attend the full three-week retreat. Track 2 will be the primary focus of this retreat and contain the majority of all participants who attend (>95%). There will be a limited number of invitations for Track 2 because of space constraints, there are a fixed number of rooms and because of the advanced nature of the material.

As part of Track 2 you will enjoy a deep and rich practical experience in Lao Tse's meditation tradition. You will receive the Presence Practices and the more advanced teachings related to the Inner Dissolving methods within Taoism. Most authentic meditation traditions require inner initiates to withdraw from the outer world for an extended duration of time - from a few weeks to many years.

Three weeks allows for what needs to come forth to arise naturally without distractions. The retreat center is a perfect space for you to go inward amongst nature and to get away from the stresses of life. Three weeks is just enough time to develop a organic rhythm or habit that you can intregrate into your life after the retreat.

You will have the option to join morning and night meditation moving practice groups (tai chi, bagua and qigong) depending on your interest. There will also be sitting meditation practice sessions assigned outside of class time that can be either done individually in or in groups.

All who are invited are encouraged come to enjoy this important retreat for what it is without worrying about any expectations. You'll leave with a clear set of skills that can be of service to you for the rest of your life. Because there is no testing you will be clear from performance stresses so you can focus on what is most important--realizing the true potential of these Taoist practices and advancing on your spiritual path.

  • Priority will also be given to those who have:

Track 3: Presence Practices Instructor Certification – Level 1
[500 Hour Program]

To attend this retreat in Track 3 you must have extensive experience, multiple certifications in the Energy Arts system, be actively teaching Energy Arts in your community and planning to teach the Taoist meditation practices once successfully completing this instructor training.

Teaching meditation requires the highest level of competence to help people both with the mechanics of sitting or standing meditation and also to facilitate students to make shifts as they work through mental, emotional and psychic experiences. To qualify for this track you must:

  • Reply to invitation, signifying intent to attend by Jan 1, 2012
  • Have multiple certifications in the Energy Arts system
  • Complete the Taoist Meditation Circle Program in its entirety.
  • Complete no less than 100 hours of practice before the retreat
  • On day one successfully demonstrate:
    • A full body (belly, sides and kidneys) 30 second breath while meditating.
    • For 30 minutes, maintain sitting straight with correct seated alignments and no fidgeting
    • Staying reasonably present, without noticeably fully spacing out or nodding off.
  • Have studied with Bruce for minimum of five+ years and receive direct approval from Bruce.
  • Actively teach Energy Arts Programs in your community through classes and private lessons
  • If certified, intend to teach meditation within a reasonable time.

Why these requirements?

  • Teaching meditation carries skills above and beyond those needed for other Energy Arts such as tai chi and qigong.
  • To prevent false expectations. Those who pass the pretest have arrived at this course with the minimum needed to have a realistic chance of achieving certification. If not, it is utterly unreasonable to expect to certify at the end. However, if a prodigy emerges whose exceptional merit justifies it, that person’s specific case may be considered.
  • Meditating to benefit your personal life requires significantly less skill than is needed to teach it. Hence the certification process. Bruce does not sell instructor certificates—they must be legitimately earned. Many arrive at Bruce’s instructor trainings with inflated views of their skills. The pretesting procedure is to inject some reality into the process.
  • Bruce has no senior instructors in meditation to help pull up the juniors and retest them mid-training.

NOTE: This Instructor Training track is insufficient by itself to entitle someone to teach Taoist Inner Dissolving within Liu’s lineage. It does however provide a first concrete step on this path.
