Stillness in Movement: Tai Chi & Bagua as Meditation

“Moving Meditation” is a popular phrase in tai chi circles…but what does that truly mean?

It’s much more than simply moving fluidy and feeling more calm and relaxed. Genuine meditation traditions give you the capacity to not only still the surface noise of your mind and body, but connect you to the deepest layers of yourself, resolve the blockages and traumas of the conscious and unconscious mind, and help you feel fully present, alive, and spontaneous no matter what life throws your way.

This is a deep wellspring of knowledge that is rarely understood, much less taught.


Course Details

In this course, Taoist Lineage Master Bruce Frantzis will lead students into using their moving practice of tai chi and bagua as genuine, transformative meditation. Teaching will be alternated between tai chi and bagua throughout the duration of the course, allowing the common threads and contrasts between the two arts to deepen the training.

If you do not practice tai chi or bagua, some teaching of basic choreography may be worked into the course. However, the emphasis will not be teaching the physical movements of tai chi and bagua, but rather how they can be used as a method of Taoist meditation. If you do not currently practice tai chi or bagua, the movement choreography taught in the previous week of Tai Chi Circling Hands: Exploring Neigong, Circularity, and Qi will give you a physical container to participate in this course by Master Frantzis.

Course Content

Have you ever been confused about what “meditation” actually means? You’re certainly not alone. It seems the popular usage of the word has been diluted to mean nearly anything.

In contrast to being vague and opaque, Taoists over millennia have been known as some of the premier energetic and meditative “scientists” in the history of the world. Their approach to consciousness has always been practical, integrated, and specific.

By mapping the energetic continuum between body, energy, mind, and spirit (or jing, qi, shen), they laid a roadmap connecting the opening of the body and energy, to realizing the potential of consciousness and spirit. These things are not seen as separate, but rather supporting each other as an integrated whole that leads to the core of who and what you are.

This course will be giving you real techniques and practical steps on a path toward exploring your body, energy, and mind using moving meditation as your vehicle.

Some of what is planned…

For beginning students:

  • Keeping the mind stable while moving with the eyes open
  • What you need to do in the physical body to allow access to a meditative mind state
  • Identifying the sense of how energy is flowing through you and how your breath and intention affects that flow
  • Using neigong and qigong to fuel meditation
  • Finding stillness in midst of activity and the speed of daily life

 

For experienced students:

  • Deepening your internal awareness and expanding it to include the body and energetic field as a continuous whole
  • Feeling the primary energy channels of the body and recognizing how the qi of body is moving within them
  • How the qi of the primary channels is affected by the inner world of your emotions, perceptions, psychic influences, and karmic conditions
  • Becoming aware of the heart-mind and opening the three dantiens
  • Understanding how your inner world and what is perceived as the outer world join, balance, and go beyond toward contacting your spiritual nature

 

Lessons will be communicated in the traditional way, by teaching what is determined to be of greatest value to the students in the room. Course content is not conveyed in a rigid, checklist fashion, but rather flows spontaneously with what is emerging in the teaching and those receiving it.

This event will be focused on not only giving you a greater understanding of moving meditation within tai chi and bagua and the context of how to apply it, but more importantly leading you into feeling the quality of mind necessary for these practices to take root within you.

Event Structure

Registration/Check-in: July 24 (Saturday), 8:00-9:00AM--First class session is 9:00AM.

Prerequisites: All levels welcome.

Accommodation: is not included in the course fee, students are responsible for making their own arrangements. You can scroll down to the location section for more information about finding accommodation.

Course Schedule

With many still unable to travel, the format for this summer’s events will be a hybrid model of both in-person attendance and virtual online broadcast. That means that a portion of the classes that you are attending will also be broadcast online to a virtual audience. Other sessions will be exclusively available to those who are attending in-person. In-person attendees will also receive a digital recording of the broadcasted portions of this event within a week of course conclusion. 

All Saturday & Sunday teaching will be broadcast virtually, as well as the first hour of the morning session on Tues-Thurs. The remaining teaching time on Tuesday through Thursday will be exclusively available to our in-person attendees.

Saturday & Sunday (All classes recorded and virtually broadcast)

Morning Session – 9am – 11am / Lunch Break – 11am – 1pm/ Afternoon Session – 1pm – 3pm

Tuesday – Thursday (First hour of Morning Session recorded and virtually broadcast)

Morning Session – 10:30am – 12:30pm / Lunch Break – 12:30pm – 2:30pm / Afternoon Session – 2:30pm – 4:30pm

Event Recordings

A wonderful feature of this summer’s hybrid model is that as an in-person attendee, you will also receive a digital recording of all the classes and practices that are being broadcast virtually. These class recordings are an incredibly valuable way to review the content of your course at your convenience. It’s like having digital notes to remember what you were working on! Your recordings may be watched online at your convenience, or downloaded to your personal device.

Bonus Sessions

If you’re still finding yourself wanting to squeeze in a bit more training and practice during your visit to The Tao Space, all event attendees are also welcome to attend any of our regular weekly classes and guided practices that are taught at the school as part of our Tao Space Live online subscription program. 

These classes are taught by Master Bruce Frantzis, Craig Barnes, and international summer guest instructors to be announced. There are over 7 hours of classes each week taught by world class Energy Arts instructors. Just be sure to get enough rest.

A standout experience of attending an Energy Arts event in-person is sharing the time with an amazing group of people who are as deeply interested in energetic practices as you are. You’ll be enjoying the support and encouragement of practitioners with experience levels all the way from first day beginners, through attendees that have been practicing and teaching the Energy Arts system for decades.

To top it off, you’ll be learning right at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The world famous Rocky Mountain National Park is just a scenic 45 minute drive from the school. Or stay closer to home and enjoy a walk around beautiful Lake McIntosh just a few minutes drive away. The Pearl Street walking mall in nearby Boulder is also a great way to spend some downtime when you’re unwinding from class or on a day off.


Covid/Safety Policy

We will be referring to the local governmental guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Boulder County is currently at status level CLEAR. Level Clear does not have any mandatory mitigation requirements for businesses or gatherings.

Attendance Cap

In the interest of abundant caution and to maintain more generous room spacing, we’ll currently be limiting event attendance to 75 participants. If local and national advisories continue to trend positively, we will be re-evaluating the course limit on June 17 and may choose to open an additional 25 spots for registration (still well below our total room capacity under normal circumstances).

Venue

Our event training hall is spacious with excellent air turnover. We will have multiple high capacity UV enhanced air filters operating throughout the course as well as ozone air treatments during off course hours. Heightened cleaning protocols will also be in place.

Masking

We will be following local governmental guidelines regarding masking requirements. Currently, Boulder County is at Level Clear, meaning there are no mandatory mask wearing requirements for businesses or gatherings.

Please feel free to mask to your level of comfort regardless of local advisories. Be prepared to wear a mask at the event should local guidelines change.

Vaccination

Participants will not be required to present proof of vaccination to attend.

Symptoms

Should you develop symptoms of illness (fever, nausea, sore throat, coughing, etc.), you must notify event staff immediately and you will not be permitted to come to class. After your symptoms have cleared, you will need to present a clear Covid-19 test in order to return to the event. You will be issued pro-rated course credit for any event days missed during recovery.

This training course is not recommended for those with any kind of mental health issues or major medical problems. We simply do not have the resources to handle these needs.

Please note: The practice of Taoist energy arts may carry risks. The organizers are very concerned to ensure that the training is a positive experience for every participant. If for any reason whatsoever Bruce and/or his assistants deem that there may be any potential safety risks for you during this training, you will be asked to leave the course and suspend training immediately.

If this occurs you will be refunded a prorated course fee. All other expenses that you may have incurred, including lodging and travel will be your sole responsibility and the Energy Arts will not be responsible for these expenses.
