Weekend of April 17 – 19: Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong & Bagua Zhang

April 17 - April 19

April 17  (Friday Evening Only)

Bagua Zhang: An Introduction

For Beginners and Experienced Students

Bagua zhang was developed 4,000 years ago in Taoist monasteries primarily for health and meditation. In the last hundred years, bagua zhang has become known as a powerful internal martial art, but it is equally effective as a health and moving meditation practice.

Master Frantzis is a traditional bagua lineage holder and is equally adept at teaching bagua as a form of meditation and spiritual development, as well as a martial art. The meditation aspect of bagua is rarely learned or taught, and he was guided into the depth of these teachings by his teacher Liu Hung Chieh. In addition to being an accomplished scholar and martial artist from the original Beijing Bagua School, Liu was also recognized within Taoism as having attained the highest realization of the art as a Taoist Immortal or Sage.

Like the monks of ancient times who practiced bagua, people today do Circle Walking to achieve three intertwined goals:

  • Open the mind to achieve calmness, stillness and clarity
  • Generate a strong, healthy body with relaxed nerves and great stamina
  • Developing internal balance and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to maintain this balance in a rapidly changing world

Walking the Circle is the primary practice of bagua that builds a practitioner’s health and qi, while also creating a mind that can flow smoothly with the constant shifts and changes of life. This two-and-a-half hour sample course will introduce students to basic bagua stepping techniques and the conceptual framework underpinning why bagua is such an exceptional practice for physical, energetic and spiritual vitality.

Some of the benefits of Bagua Circle Walking include:

  • Learning how to relax while in motion.
  • Building the body’s qi.
  • Strengthening the body, especially the joints.
  • Becoming comfortable and smooth with rapid change.
  • Practicing an incredibly effective form of moving meditation.
  • Developing an open sense of relaxed awareness.

Whether you are just beginning your practice of Bagua, or are an experienced practitioner, we hope you’ll join us for this lively evening exploring the fascinating art of Bagua Circle Walking!

Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong & The Golden Thread: Part I

For Beginners and Experienced Students

Together this weekend event and its companion weekend (offered in October) present a very rare opportunity to study Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong—the most complete qigong system in our Taoist Water Tradition. Master Frantzis will teach from the perspective of The Golden Thread, one of the most profound inner subjects in Old Taoism.

Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong is so comprehensive that in order to enhance his personal longevity, it was the only qigong set Master Frantzis’ last and greatest Taoist teacher in China, Lineage Master Liu Hung Chieh, chose to practice after the age of 50.

The Golden Thread is the study of developing continuity and connectedness at all levels of one’s being, and it is one of the crown jewels of Taoist energy arts. Master Frantzis is making The Golden Thread an overarching theme of his teachings at the Training Center in 2020.

You’ll benefit from this approach whether you are a qigong beginner or a highly experienced practitioner of Gods.

Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong

Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong consists of six beautiful and graceful continuously, circling movements done from a standing position. You don’t move your feet, and yet you exercise every part of your body deeply and thoroughly. You repeat each movement the same number of times, ideally 20.

In this course, Master Frantzis and his Senior Instructors will teach you Movements 1, 2 and 4 of the Gods system, or help you refine your existing knowledge of these movements. In the October companion weekend, their focus will be Movements 3, 5 and 6.

The movements of Gods are relatively easy to learn and initially can be especially helpful in releasing your neck, shoulders and upper back.

Gods becomes a more and more advanced practice as you learn to put ever more sophisticated and subtle energy development practices inside its movements. Ultimately, it becomes the most advanced and powerful qigong practice that we teach.

At this level of practice, the movements of Gods can make your bones stronger, cleanse your emotional body of negative energy, open and stabilize your heart center and central energy channel, release spiritual blockages and energize the brain.

The Gods set can be practiced as an evolutionary, spiritual bridge between qigong and Taoist meditation, what in Chinese is called shengong.

The Golden Thread within Gods

The study of The Golden Thread within Gods Playing in the Clouds is initially focused on how to generate ever deeper continuity and connectedness inside of you, from the moment you begin the set straight through until you finish.

This development process starts at the level of your physical body, and over time spreads to all levels of your being—including your qi, emotions, thoughts, psychic capacities, karma and essence. It also spreads to include your connectedness and continuity with who and what is outside of you, and eventually to all and everything in the universe.

Course Details

This course will be taught by Master Frantzis and his Senior Instructors, including Craig Barnes and Bill Ryan.

At some times in the weekend, all students will be together for instruction with Master Frantzis. At other times, students will be separated into groups in order to receive instruction and feedback appropriate to their level of experience from Master Frantzis or his Senior Instructors.

Training Progression

This weekend’s event is the first of two companion Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong weekends to be offered at the Center this year. The second, to be offered from October 10 & 11, will be an extension of this weekend emphasizing the Golden Thread within Gods movements 3, 5 and 6, as well as within the entire set as a whole.

For beginners, attendance at one or ideally both of these weekends will offer an excellent introduction to Gods Playing in the Clouds Qigong, and to the subject of the Golden Thread.

For experienced Gods practitioners the two weekends will be wonderful opportunities to gain feedback and inspiration for your practice; to deepen your knowledge of Gods, and to begin or intensify your exploration of the profound subject of the Golden Thread.

If you are a participant in the Gods Online Training Circle, these weekends will be excellent opportunities for you to get live instruction and feedback from Master Frantzis and his Senior Instructors, and greatly boost the results you gain from the online program.
