Originally from a martial arts background, I began judo aged 6 years old and then moved on to Shotokan karate, aikido, kung fu and krav maga. At fifteen I began standing chi kung (zhang zhuang), which I found dramatically improved my karate. This practice led me on a journey to uncover the roots of a strange old Chinese exercise system known as the Neijia or ‘internal school.’
At 22 I travelled to India and trained intensively for six months studying hatha and kriya yoga but ultimately I felt dissatisfied – don’t get me wrong yoga is great but somewhere deep inside I felt a calling for the old Chinese system I had stumbled upon in my teens.
I travelled to Manali and there met an Italian man called Sahm who taught me the Cheng Man-Ching short Yang style of tai chi.
Freshly inspired, I returned to England and sought a teacher who could deepen my understanding of the neijia. As luck would have it such a teacher lived in my hometown. Dr Matthew Brewer had been studying under a renowned American master named Bruce Frantzis and was teaching his material exclusively.
I trained with Matthew and other senior instructors within the Frantzis system for 4 years before my first actual instructor training with Bruce himself. Profoundly impressed by Master Frantzis I spent the next five years travelling to the US in order to attend his instructor trainings. I am now a certified instructor in the complete Bruce Frantzis Energy Arts System.
At 28 I was approached by the British charity Age Concern to create a tai chi based exercise program as a form of preventative care for the elderly. Under the auspices of my old teacher Dr Brewer, I developed a three-month course which proved so successful that it ran for a further 2 years. I have over one hundred testimonials from the attendees of these courses that demonstrate how tai chi based exercise can mitigate and, in some cases, seemingly cure many of the diseases associated with old age. I still take great pleasure in looking over them.
More recently I have worked with a variety of individuals from all walks of life. From actors and performers to athletes and business professionals, young children to the terminally sick.
Although I maintain a healthy interest in martial arts my primary focus of teaching is now on health, healing and meditation.
