Nelson has been a student at Brookline Tai Chi and with Bruce Frantzis/Energy Arts since 2006. Tai chi and qigong have given him the tools to be calm, relaxed, and present, and he’s truly grateful for the opportunity to share these practices with students since 2010.
Before tai chi, Nelson trained for several years of taekwondo before he started looking for something more, and he wasn’t sure what that “more” was. A good friend of his lent him a book by Bruce Frantzis, The Power of Internal Martial Arts: Combat Secrets of Ba Gua, Tai Chi, and Hsing-I. Bruce’s anecdotes and journey through internal martial arts captivated Nelson. One theme that resonated with him was the principle that “no pain, no gain” in martial arts training was counter-productive. Another was the possibility that we as internal arts practitioners can elevate ourselves beyond our animal instincts and remain calm in the chaos of thoughts and emotions in life as well as in combat.
