AnonymousGuestHi –
I am relatively new to Qigong practices (about 1 year) and I would like to begin some resistance training. I used to be an avid weightlifter and then gave it up once I started practicing Qigong everyday. However now that I am very loose and full of energy, I would like to begin some leg and back excercises to increase my physical strength. I would like to know if weight training will interfere with my Qigong progress? If necessary I will give up weight training, but I would love to find a balance between them both.
I am very greatful for any advice or experience you guys might be able to share with me.

AnonymousGuestHi Khary,
I asked Bruce a very similar question during a live teaching event a couple of years ago. He did not try to deter me from weight training but suggested that it be done in a relaxed manner. He warned against going very tense at any point during a repitition as this would stress the nerves and would then be counter productive to energy work. He also referred to the usage of large swords by certain Bagua practitioners as a means of resistance training. I cannot remember his exact words but this is the general understanding I picked up from what he said. I am no longer weight training myself as my Tai chi, Bagua and Chi gung practice takes up all my “spare” time. Hope this helps!

AnonymousGuestKhary,
I would suggest looking at the material of Scott Sonnon for resistance training that uses excellent body mechanics and is relaxed at the same time. Clubbells, Kettlebells and use of heavy weapons like swords and thick spears integrate the body and tone the fascia at the same time. Many of the motions of kettlebells and club bells is similar to the chi hung that Kumar teaches.
