I’m an absolute beginner of Tai Chi program or any internal martial arts. I started following the beginners videos which uploaded into the account and almost went up to the lesson 26-27. I am confident that I have got most of the movements up to the single whip and things like, which we need to concentrate like shifting the weight from one leg to another or turning the pelvic area in a reverse rotations or twisting and rotation of the hands or bend and tuck of pelvic area. But my problem is that all these movements will take only 2-3 min to finish and I have not started feeling any energy movement/flow. So I’m repeating each step several times and the whole sequence several times. Especially right before the sequence I try to do the relaxation of head to toe, the one which Bruce explained in the lesson 2. And then try to do the commencement several times try to feel some energy. I think it might take years of practice to get the feeling of energy flow.
Is that normal that for a beginner, you just practice and with years of practice only you will start getting the feel for it? Or am I doing something wrong, which is the reason I’m not feeling any energy flow.

    hi till
sounds like your on the right track.
it can take years to feel chi, but not always, seems like people are different.
but for sure it’s harder to feel the chi as you are learning new movements.
when I started taiji training, at first I noticed a general feeling of ease and smoothness after I practiced.
after I had been practiing regularly for a while, I started to feel the flow of energy in my body; first a little bit, but it’s built up over time.

another part of taiji is that your allowing yourself to be in balance. wanting sometning to happen is a form of unbalance. this sounds weird, but trying to hard to notice your chi can backfire. if you simply allow yourself to feel everything you can as you practice, over time your awareness will get more and more clear.

also, taiji is a very long term sort of art, if you settle into a good practice routine and keep enjoying your practice, you will benefit a lot, whether or not you quickly feel your chi.

also, I will mention that dragon and tiger chi gung is a much quicker method to feel the chi around your body. that’s what it’s built to do. once you can feel the chi from d and t practice, then you can more easily recognize it in your taiji practice. I will say that taiji has a lot to offer that dragon and tiger doesn’t, I only mention d and t for the specific function of feeling the chi

hope this helps, and id like to hear what others think or have experienced as well…

You can still play around with that balance as a beginner. I quickly got the idea of pressing down to bring my hands up in commencement, but it has always depended on a lot of things as to how effortless it is. Most of the time my hands don’t float up but sometimes they kind of do. That’s the thing you’ll find as a beginner. You can get the idea of it but it takes time to stabilise it and make it happen in a more refined way. Just enjoy it and stuff will eventually happen.

    Hi Richard.

Great points. It took me eleven years of daily training to get to the point where I could say, ‘Aha, I felt something!’ In one of my classes a student in her third lesson got this funny look on her face and described a ‘weird feeling’ that was obviously Qi movement. We differ a lot in our sensitivity. Till, just keep plugging away and don’t try to feel specific Qi movement, just increase your awareness of everything happening in your body. You’ll get it.

    Richard, Cameron, Erich,
Thank you all very much for all the great tips. I started getting some kinda feeling (like some resistance to the palm..) when i’m doing commencement, and upto the wrapping movement or so and these feelings I’m not getting all the time. Only when I’ so relaxed from head to toe, which some times takes me to 15 to 20 min to do so. Some times I couldn’t even relax, and then I won’t get any resistance or whatever I feel…. I don’t even know whether this is the “Qi” feeling.
