    Hi Anthony,

I always say that the Energy Gates book, where Bruce teaches outer dissolving, is the cornerstone text of this whole system. You can learn a lot from working through the material in that book. I relied on it for years when I wasn’t around a teacher on a regular basis and still refer to the sequences and outlines when I’m running courses on Energy Gates.

    Good luck with your practice!

I too don’t have anyone living near me currently who teaches this method of meditation. I took one afternoon seminar with bruce on the topic back when i was in new york. other than that I only have the self study materials. Between the cd set, the couple of books he has that deal with the topic, the taoist meditation circle, and the monthly meditation thing that preceeded it, that’s actually quite a lot of stuff. I’ve been going through it steadily. I think I’ve made a lot of progress, more than I thought I could. I meditate avidly now, about 45 minutes a day (I could do more, but that’s all my schedule can afford), and I am seeing all the benefits, physical, mental, and spiritual, promised as advertised and I feel I’m still progressing. Its enough for a lot of people to remark that I’m a changed person from what I was before. And I think in the end, that’s the real mark of success. It is probably best to have a face to face master to get you to the highest levels, but if you are seeing and feeling benefit and enjoying yourself, isn’t that the point of the endeavor to begin with?

The first stage of energy gates (sinking your chi) isn’t a water method thing per se, so you could really spend a few years in any decent tai chi class learning that. I don’t think there is a lot of point to dissolving if you don’t have that first.

Yeah, Cameron brings up a good point. I suppose it was a little irresponsible for me to not initially mention that I’ve been studying various forms of daoist martial arts and qigong for going on 20 years. I have found the water method practices a bit less common, and the dissolving method pretty much exclusive to Bruce’s teachings, but in general basic areas there is a lot of overlap with say any authentic tai chi school. There may not be an energy arts instructor near you, but there’s a good chance there’s some people around who know what their doing, daoist practice wise. You can use the stuff you learn locally as a good base to build up from. It’s best to get it the face to face way, but if that’s not an option, I see no reason to not attempt extensive self study. Like I said before, if its working its working, no faking that.
