AnonymousGuestHello, grew up in a Kempo school that integrated the Chinese internal arts into it. We practiced many forms of qigong which were for building qi and creating health until one got to black belt and they were slowly led to learn iron palm of which you had to be a 2nd or 3rd degree to actually do.
We spend much time with this one tai chi form called “8 Mother of Palm” or something like it. It consisted of these eight moves that had martial and energy applications, you could even stand at the pose at the end of each movement and breathe. We practiced this in all directions.Does anyone on this forum with more knowledge of tai chi have any idea about this form? I still practice it but my goals are not martial any more and are more about health and inner development. Would a form such as this still hold benefit for me? Thank you.

AnonymousGuestHey David,
Perhaps you were learning some form of Bagua? Bagua has 8 palm changes and is sometimes referred to as the “8 mother palms”

AnonymousGuestI’ve seen a few forms that have a posture chosen that corresponds to each of the eight-energies of taichi (grasping bird’s tail and the combos: ie peng, lu, an, ji, etc.) usually a single whip is in there- etc.
[that first came to mind upon your description, and then more so when you wrote “you could even stand at the post at the end of ea movement and breathe” ~ holding a pose… (“practiced in all dirs” -thus 4times? or 8times?= to the corners also, then 8movesx8reps ?)
________
I’m not sure if there is one in particular called that in TaiChi.. or if this is a Kenpo related form…
(many other traditions- external or even “int’l-ext’l” mixed style– just being named “TaiChi”, or even “Bagua”, doesn’t make it “int’l”) If this is a form that was developed, like the Kenpo components forms and/or one of the forms that have a ltd set of moves (depending upon how the form is “named” – one “movement” can actually have a few steps.. so that could then be a “short form”.. just named eight)…
…..
So in short (not sure if the above clarifies or contrasts with your recall, and you could confirm further what you reference)… if it is a form that has a movement for the TaiChi energies (or if you “pack” int’l neigung components into each movement.. as can be done from what Bruce teaches… ) -the development of the TaiChi Energetics I think hold great benefit.. health/inner devel (as well as martial…)– nice how this process, the martial is an offshoot of “health-strengthening” in a relaxed way.. vs Martial being distinct from Health- some systems you need to practice a “health-set” to from the “Martial development” (not use banging from use/application/spar.. just the exercise itself is harsh-healthwise.. a harm affect
….
ie do a “peng” movement- and have a feeling of wind arising.. “an” movement, as if in an elevator that was going down and noticeably slows.. and that feeling of sinking/compression into floor.. -etc. Have the out-reaching aspect of moves, balanced by the “in-reaching” aspect of moves.. so that at end of set you feel each dynamic and yet not too much of either (thus a twist to L, and a twist to R… on both feet, and on either side foot.. reach up with an arm, while down with the other- etc. as another aspect of a form’s movements, and balancing from performing it.[just 2cents-

AnonymousGuestI guess it must be. It was a pretty complete system. Probably a fire based approach. We did some of the spirals but other qigong methods were pretty yang in nature.
