    Hello.

    Tai Chi – Month 1

Bruce recommends practicing a minimum of 10 sets daily.

    What defines one set?
Is it repeating the movement 10 times as in the practice session?
Or is it repeating the practice session 10 times? So in effect that would be repeating the movement 100 times.

    What is everyone else doing?

    Thanks,

    Adam

    Howdy Adam,

If you’re on Month 1, a set is doing commencement.

Any other month, it is commencement through all the moves learned up to where you’re at that defines a “set”.

    …at least, I hope so! ;-)

    Hi Adam,

as far as I understand it Bruce recommends to practice every new movement at least ten times a day and also ideally 10 times the form from commencement.

    regards,

    Bit confusing ?
I would guess something similar to say weight training. For example you might do 10 repetitions of an exercise, lets say bar bell curl. Then progress to 10 SETS of ten.
In our case taking say “Beginners Level Practice,” the demo and practice covers 10 repetitions. I would have thought after being comfortable with the 10 reps. or 1 Set, of this practice, one would want to proceed to maybe 2 Sets ie 10 reps x 10reps and so on, eventually aiming for 10 Sets of the Practice eg Demo of 10 (! Set) x 10 = 10Sets.

Another angle (to repeat, a type of ‘set’ repetition :) is 70% in the sense as Bruce mentions, TaiChiChuan specifically (although also the NeiGung “sets”- not as overtly mentioned) to go fast-enough moving to keep your focus, but slow enough to allow to release and connect-up-smoothly..
if start to zone-out, might need accel..

-but also, even in the first movement/rep to have the same Presence as in the last one.. so be sure to watch for the “mind-less repetition”..

so just as speed-moving (during each), also how many do- enough # to get in the groove (the warmup-getting moving before ‘in it’) but too many and Thoughts will pop-to the surface (ThinkingAbout it.. vs actually experiencing it.. just a model of what you are doing.. a type of “zoning-out”).. [usually only notice this has occurred, once reflect back on your practice later and realize, uh I wasn’t in it as much, as I lost contact at some pt.. here-gone-here-lost it/touch-slip.. that is tiring-also.. even more so.]

    HI all,

After entering last mail re SETS…I returned to Month 2 Qigong lessons and note in Session 6 “Openings & Closings,” Bruce makes it very clear that 20 Reps of the exercise comprises 1 Set. If you decide to do this twice eg 20 x 2, then you will have done 2 SETS of 20 = 40 reps of exercise/form.

Just as another aspect- there is the idea of doing “a set” (as in a particular ‘chi gung’ set..) [as Marriage of Heave&Earth is referred to as a chigung-set, vs different ‘sets’ etc.]

    -thus unrelated to “reps”

(repetition being repeat.. vs each movement is done- Once.. even if do multiple times, each movement is done fully present, alive- singular).

You repeat from commencement to as far as we have got 10 times.
When we get further we will have more to do.
At the moment i practice other types of Qi gong or standing to make up an exercise session.
It is not like working out in a gym.
