I am Jim Kulma, I live in Lakewood, Ohio. I’ve be playing Yang taiji and several qigong forms, my favorite is the Wild Goose Routine, Dayan Gong. I’m very happy to be in the Old Yang Tai Chi group.
On Month 3, Video 6, the Neigong on Lu, Bruce indicates that the energy absorbs on yin surface, closing joints, and twisting in. This makes sense on the right arm- thumb twisting into the center. But the left thumb turns out, away from the center.
Also, on Video 22, the Neigong of Ji, Bruce says that as the hands come together, the energy flows in, on the yin surface, closing the joints, and that we twist in. The left hand twists into the center, but the right thumb twists out, away fro the center.
Bruce, do you mean that–even though one of the hands twists out, the energy flows in, even though one hand is physically moving the other direction? I can get the feeling of the flow, but I wonder about the twisting.
Thank you for a wonderful class. I have learned very much! Jim

Hello Jim, best wishes and luck in your development.. I hope you are finding new levels to what you practiced before, as well as the new practices (and keep them distinct, even as they enrich each other).

.. I’d just mention it seems you jump from Bruce says it is twisting in “But the Left thumbs turns out…” -it seems you assume/interpret that twisting-in (or out) is one thing.. when there is more to it.. so that might be the first place to look at (in prior two months, the videos on twisting/turning might elucidate).. twisting one-way.. can be done in a few different “similar looking” on the outside.. (thus either in, or out, or lengthening out, and/or lengthening-in.. or letting-loose the lengthening.. just as Opening and/or closing isn’t outwardly obvious)

good luck- I hope that helps a bit

Another important part of this came to mind- so just to add, “twisting” is distinct from “turning” (ie turn the forearm one-way or the other.. getting the soft-tissue-fibers to move as a twist, along-with the turn or not.. ..)

–as twist is not-only clock-wise at one-end, and counter-clockwise turn at other.. (imagine two hands wringing a wet-cloth, then another hands in there… or 4 hands, 2 pairs, each turning one way, and the between changes back and forth)..

but 3, 4 or 5 turns those darn complete answers, vs the what-is-needed… (TooMuchInfo?)
but the key: “Turning”, linking to Torso&Limb wrapping (to circle, vs to drive in/absorb, vs emanate out/to surface).. a bit different than “Twisting” (which in courses with Bruce has been complex issue, thus it seems to have been simplified a bit)

but made easier.. at essence it is an internal component (like dissolving- it just “does-that”.. )
once you can A) feel what’s involved, then B) directly trigger it… but to then go back and say, how explain it?
(rather to wiggle your ear, or move a finger.. you just move it..)

the old story of the caterpillar trying to direct his legs and getting all tangled up and tripping… (vs just walking, and all the hundred-legs move)
