I’ve just finished studying taichi, section 19, month 12, of old yang style tai chi
Bruce taught the movements of TURN BODY AND CHOP WITH FIST.
No problems with his teaching from 1:19 to 3:19. But the movement appears different when he shows it at the end of this section from 6:46 to 6:59. It happens the same when it gets to section 29 (beginner level practice). Comparing with section 19 it seems it’s missing one repetition of the half punch.
In section 19, bruce teaches to do two repetition, as shown from 1:59 to 3:12. But in the practice it doesn’t repeat.
    Did I get it wrong?

Hello there (2017! :) .. I think I follow what you are saying (I must admit not to re-viewing the videos, at the timecodes you detailed nicely, so I might be off)..

I recall there being an emphasis when he presented it, where he showed the gesture/movement -while he was continuing to speak- thus describing parts didn’t link as the whole-final seq.
In short, I believe turn body (from the high-low Scurve movement, “right punch to ~kidney as deng-jyau on that R-heel, with Left arm arced high -phew all to setup).. 180degree turn as pivot on Lfoot and Rstomping.. ok (I found this one a foot-placement and balance interesting, so as not to have my toes pointing partly ahead, so that on reversal the foot and toes are pointing-behind.. or even 90 to the side).. anyway

—so fist roll-down-chop, (R) wave-rotate to L ~’reverse-type punch/slice-fwd… ok- then is the Half punch type move, R ft fwd (1), then the full ‘chop with fist’ from before, L ft fwd (2) then GraspSparrow’s, (3) (wave-roll ontop of , then Rollback, into Peng, Lu (more contained than the first rollontop Rollback), Ji, An.. etc (thus 1=R ft fwd, 2=L ft fwd (roll across that left-knee), then 3=R ft fwd as step into rising Rpeng)
So I think the trick is the timing and flow, let alone the distinction of (1) vs (2).. as (1) -the half step, sort of stutters, as well as part of the movement looks the same as the previous [and =(2)]… I “think” that is why the repetition was shown for emphasis..
    …..
anyway- just thought what i think you were expressing, and what I understood, and practice as… if I misread your question (or any others note my presentation of the form is quite off), please let me know..

… best wishes.. does that seem to make sense? -luck in practicing..

(what do you think the most important element /principle/component-concept you learned-seen in this form?

Hello there, Bruce was showing how the specific movements (turn body and chop with fist) as done inside the form, but what you saw in the practice was only the new material covered in the sequence. Step forward-parry-punch and grasp sparrows tail were already covered earlier in the program so they are not part of the practice review. The spot at 6:46 to 6:59 is how this is put into the form. So 1. turn body chop with fist -(includes the half step punch), 2. Step forward parry punch 3. grap sparrows tail

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you both for taking time to reply my post.
    But I still see this:
    – from 1:51 to 2:25 Bruce teaches a movement
    – from 2:26 he repeats the same movement explaining why he does it THEN, AGAIN THEY ATACK LOW……………YOU BLOCK THEM and he goes on till 3:06 completing it. Only from this point on he begins “step forward parry and punch”.
All I want to know is WHEN WE PUT THE WHOLE FORM TOGETHER, DO I REPEAT HIS SPECIFIC MOVEMENT TWICE?

The move is only done once, 1. Turn parry punch, next 1. step forward parry punch 1 grasp sparrows tail. Looks like Bruce put in an extra while he was discribing applications, the move is only done once like what Craig is doing in the practice session
