    Hi
I wondered whether anybody could tell me about experiences of the bagua mastery program as I would like to learn bagua circle walking. Does bagua help with chronic stress. Also is bagua hard on the knees – as I have heard some people have had knee problems when doing bagua.

    Thanks

    Hi LR,
Just this past weekend I was noticing my knees to be stronger and without pain since practicing Circle Walking. Early on there was some slight discomfort in regards to the knees, but I think that was just due to the work outs. Plus I’ve found a great instructor who’s helping immensely in guiding/improving my training.
As for chronic stress, training bagua may be a more circuitous route than taiji which would be more direct. Mainly because of how rigorous and complex bagua is, a person in chronic stress may actually get more stressed. If you can have the patience to learn and have the help of a good instructor, bagua can strengthen your nervous system in such a way to bolster you against the causes of chronic stress – basically keep you from frying so easily and thereby energize you as well. Since starting bagua 7 months ago, I stress less, have more energy, and a better mood. This has been more noticeable in the past 3 months.
    Hope this helps.
    Steve

    Hi
Thanks for your reply. Do you need to have a lot of room to do Bagua practice. Have you found the meditative aspects of Bagua different to sitting meditation.

    Thanks

Due to the complex and sophisticated nature of bagua and all it introcacies, I haven’t really tapped into the meditative aspect of it, but my sitting and standing practices have improved much and I attribute that to the bagua.
As for space, I walk in a circle that’s about 10×10 to 12×12. During the straight line walking practices I walk a 15 to 20 foot stretch, but I’ve done this in as little as an 4 to 8 foot space.

Hello L R, just wroet a big blurb but lost it eating cheese and touched the computer.” Hard on the knees”. I have found circle walking not hard on my knees, depending on how you do it.pounding my foot down does shock, walking lightly like on clouds does not . As Mr Frantzis states twisting off alignment will ruin your knees,I have been practicing moving my feet off center and making sure the aligment is good {knees ,feet, nose ,head in a centerline} which does not stress my knees , I do feel compression {UP/DOWN} in my knees from circle walking though. side to side breaks the joints apart but this compression seems to strengthen my knees. The aligmnet is important as per my practing, off center ….I move feet 45 degrees or so and check alignment.Read the materials and dwell on it and you’ll discover what not to do.Gently is a good key to turn the lock,Thanx Al Ray.

If the directions are followed carefully, knees should benefit. I emphasize holding unweighted foot at ankle, sometimes for three breaths, before extending, then breathe, and apply weight in two parts as on the tapes, first pulling forward and then pushing.

Although I use a ten by eleven room, the actual practice area is less. A space on my patio or old deck works fine.

Hello Mike Y (and all others).. I’m not sure if writing this if you knew about the instructors-page on this website (this link goes to listing by geographical locale… UK at the bottom- and has one in that city/town name.. http://www.energyarts.com/instructors )

Just as a note: for anyone else that might read this, in other places, if you do or don’t find a name in your nearby-neighborhood area .. consider the surroundings- as if find an instructor to visit every other month or two.. and you get good guidance from them (that instructor and their group, if any, or if it is private sessions / fdbk)… Assuming you can self-practice regularly (daily? weekly? but ongoing inbetween).. then much of the grind and trail-error you do (vs paying for that time in a class).

But- I realize- modern-wise, there is more social-support in a class setting.. and having a group is great, but with logistics even those that have such a class often stop-going.. and then stop practicing (as they tied it up with their being in the group, etc.).. -as well as most classes (Bagua Zhang, or heck Soccer/Football, Yoga, Fencing– whatever kind of class- most “coaches” expect in-between skill-devel practice)..
So not to belabour, just as three cats: nearby local, then a bit further out surrounding.. and finally- farther away (like travelling from anywhere- like in US, or down-under to Ibiza).. if it is worth the instruction you are getting..

To quote from “Taoist Energy Arts” video-documentary Bruce did yrs back “days or months with a really good teacher can often surpass years with an ok teacher.” (and thus farther than a teacher that teachers what you expect the art to be, but it isn’t.)
A big issue is just which teachers you can not only arrange contact with, but that you “click-with” (ie you and they resonate.. and you receive the goals and gains you seek.. does it work out.. Consider the first contact(s) as interview-tests.. little bits at a time, vs find one and dive in).

    Just a perspective…

so if any goes to the above link can find instructors, even just arrange an initial meet-greet (at an event be someone else?) -as I’ve written in some other posts.

Best wishes.. (also post on another thread on this forum in re to considerations one might look at in “Learning HowTo learn” ~Mastery) -cheers
