    Hello,

I’m quite new to the energy arts. I started a Tai Chi class about three months ago, after having suffered from sciatica (caused by recurrent disc herniations) for several years. Doing Tai Chi felt very natural and intuitive. It gave me renewed energy and calm at the same time so I stuck to it, once a week for about 8 weeks. I hadn’t really thought about Chi that much, nor was I aware of that possibility, but while practicing calm qi gung exercises in week 6 I suddenly started to feel some sort of magnetic force or pulse moving around between my hands and belly. I was standing in standard / meditative qi gung pose at the time, and we were outside in a sunny garden. My teacher later explained to me that I had felt my qi. I was surprised, but at the same time it felt very natural and somehow familiar. I’ve been feeling it ever since – for about a month now – and have been reading about it here and there and practicing poses on a daily basis. Starting and ending my day this way makes me feel a lot better and helps me deal with the pain. However, I feel I need a more solid base in doing things right. Sometimes I have weird sensations and I’m a bit worried I might be doing things wrong. A few questions:

    – last week i practiced “standing” with my hands apart in front of my underbelly. I noticed qi at the top of my head and accumulating in my head. I felt headaches and dizziness for about a week. The pain was mild and I was able to handle it, but I found it strange. Can anybody help me explain?

    – this week I slightly altered the exercise, based on a book on Chi-Neng Qi Gong. I keep my hands in front of me, with my finger tips touching. The headaches (or rather, pressure in my head) is gone, but for a few days now, I notice I’m being slowly rocked forward and backward, and sometimes sideways by the qi while I’m in position. Sometimes I even feel it when I’m not meditating, but doing whatever else, standing or sitting still. It feels okay, but I wonder if this is normal, and what causes this?

Generally I feel I need some basics, and a better understanding of how qi flows work and how to be able to influence them in order to manage or even heal my pain. Can anyone recommend a book, course, video? I’ver started Bruce’s first Tiger/Dragon PDF, I’m hoping that will help a bit.

Also, I’m seriously considering doing the “Bend the Bow, shoot the Arrow Qigong” course in Hove in October. Do I need more experience or practice in order to be able to participate? Is it safe and advisable for someone with spinal issues?

    Thanks for any reactions!

I’d like to add that I’ve always been quite sceptic about alternative remedies, and never even considered doing acupuncture or anything of the kind. But somehow, qi “happened” to me, and feels so natural that I’ve surrendered to it. I must say that it has been a bit scary at times, being woken sometimes at night by qi sensations in my chest, hands, back etc, and made me wonder if I’d lost y mind. But after reading so many others’ stories, I now feel it must be something natural and hope I will start to feel its benefits.
