So far, I cannot say I have felt any particular emotions in my meditation that we are to be aware of …..is anyone else having any experiences or lack thereof they care to share?

Saying that, I have had what I would call slight emotions connected to topics of distraction and random thoughts but not sure if thats what Im to be looking out for.

Kevin, my experience is similar to yours. I will write more if this post goes through, I’ve been getting an error when I try to post…

Success – my post went through! I definitely know where you are coming from, Kevin. I am not very prone to getting any emotions coming up when I sit. It’s like they come up at the most inconvenient times, but when it’s time to sit and work on them…they’ve gone into hiding. This is a pattern with me, and I’ve talked to others who are the same.

The other thing is that I almost feel like there is so much to focus on (abeit a soft focus) , that there’s almost no room for anything else! I’m counting on my fingers, I’m breathing, I’m trying to soften and stretch my awareness to the whole of my body…there’s just no room for anything else.

One curious thing I do get is a flash of memory. The thing that stands out is the feeling of that memory, of that place. It’s just a frame, and not really associated with a particular emotion, but the feeling of what it really felt like to BE there is strong.

Hope this helps. Would like to hear from others…

What I’ve found after a lot of Bruce’s various ways of working with the emotions is that they don’t feel like what you think they feel like. I’ve had to work at clearing my mind from any expectations about what an emotion feels like in the body when sitting. As Bruce recommends, it’s useful to sit when you feel a strong emotion and really focus on it. Then you get a real taste that you can try to follow later when the emotions are more subliminal. For me, this is very much a work in progress.

………….thanks all, this is really helpful. I tend to feel the physiology of gross emotions during day to day events (anger, upset, loving warmth, caring etc.) but not a lot, if anything, during meditation or qigong – unless I’m too agitated to practice or my bucking horse mind throws in all too familiar ‘memory’ distractions. I kind of assumed that I just need to let go a bit more, improve my ‘distraction management’ and allow my sensitivity to emerge/develop. Hey ho!

I don’t have strong emotions during sessions either. However, I have this sense or maybe dread that there are some pretty strong things buried underneath the surface. I’m not sure I want them to come out but I must deal with them to advance. I think some are memory traces but I don’t want to poke them too much to find out.

Recently, I felt like for a part of my session “negative” thoughts that seemed to control my awareness and thoughts; after awhile I seemed to get over it and felt as I was being “above” or ” higher ” and they did not have any hold on me……significance? I really dont know but it felt good.
Today, I felt what I would describe as a mild feeling of claustrophobia for a short period coupled with a mild sense of panic which was also shortlived.

Matthew – what you said was SOOooo helpful! I had been getting the same sense myself, that the actual experience was different than what I thought it would be. This has also been true of a lot of exercises I do with Bruce – I’ll get this idea in my head of what I think it should feel like, then when I actually feel it it ends up being a much different experience. I think I will try to be more aware of this tendency, it’s best to approach these things with as much of a blank slate as possible, I think.
