AnonymousGuestIn this segment Bruce explains the expansion and contraction of chi from the tan thien through the 5 bows. It is mentioned that the flow is equal; reaching the extremities at the same time and all flowing back and arriving from head, hands and feet at the same time.
My ?: I have long noticed in Push Hands practice with a partner that I have the feeling of chi forming a line from feet to head and then flowing to the hands. For example, my partner pushes me, I move my tan tien internally away from the push and this brings my weight onto one leg or the other to achieve single weightiness. Standing thus, I then lengthen downward and upward along the spine and then issue chi from the hands if the opponent is offering me a hard point,
Is this sequencing OK? Is it simply a slight variation on the concept or should correct this approach?

AnonymousGuestHello Joseph, I just want to respond with my view-
it is good that what you have been doing is working for you; I think that the dan tien shifting, and the relation to the 5 bows, is different from what you mention (apples-oranges)..
so first would be in what manner one can feel the dan tien, as an energetic concreteness (and in to what degree one’s mind-con is meshed with it etc), and how the 5 bows are integrated (and bindings within them are released).. I know that the 5 bows/bending&stretching (vs folding&unfolding) are still something I’m working to grasp what the heck they are (even though having learned of them, from Bruce, a while back)…[just to jump out there- if an E-gate, any e-gate, is changed- is it from inside of it, as it itself, or as a separate thing.. if the later, it can emanate- shining out over an area, either pushing or pulling.. but if the ‘former’ changing the quality of an E-gate from ‘inside it’.. is like changing one’s mood, or mind-state ‘tone’.. so it isn’t sensed as moving a part insde- or even a sense of shrinking&growing.. but the other parts of body react and change in relation.. -thus any E-gate, but most of all the lower-dan tien]
anyway, there is the versions that reference the “lower dan” = abdominal region, and feel “movement” as ‘shifting’.. [ vs it being about int’l power flowing through the body, vs being about chi-chingshen vs being more kinetic-force-pressure, ie more the pushing/pulling connection ]
-again just one view.. but what has what you’ve recently learned and worked on revealed to you in your practice? any other aspects?anyway- not sure if above helps (as what you wrote could be meant in different ways.. espec as included is not only “Bruce says X” -so could be if what you describe is the same.. or if asking if a separate idea.. unrelated even if associated “is this sequencing ok?
(to be ok would be based upon- your purpose? (acheive a result in pushing, vs development, next)
-building foundation do you mean? glass ceiling and all that.. or based on where you are vs where going….(one might need more info to guide a custom response — I notice that incorporating these new conceptual frames in a push-hands context is tricky, as the “need to react” oft triggers the tension as well as the falling back on what works- vs driving one to re-organize reaching out in unfamiliar aspects (which will -temporarily- downgrade..
unless all these developmental paths are naturally-there.. then one needs to build them.. thus struggle, thus “invest in loss” ..
ie if it keeps working, likely one is not wandering to the edge of the Horizon, but staying in the area of the know..just one possible view pt.. luck
