AnonymousGuestWhen Bruce introduces part wild horses mane, he shows a clear weight shift and cut to the right after single whip and before holding the ball to the left (clip 2) ahead of the first part wild horses mane movement. This transitional cut to the right move is omitted by Kurt in the practice clip (14). Which is correct?

AnonymousGuestIt seems to me that the video-sections that show the moves (usually the first few videos in each “month”-Chapter) are what show the moves, other videos emphasize details..
and the ‘practice’ videos are giving a model to practice along-with, with the issue being the commentary-directing issues to focus upon. If watching the practice videos, you see something in the movements shown and/or commented upon, that could give you something to pay attn to in your practice (if you want ‘instruction’ on the movement-details, it would make sens to refer to the videos that teach that; just as in a ‘live-class’ the practice-time is not when questions are asked about how or what.. and the ‘instruction-time’ of a live-class is about the details while hints about how-to-practice aren’t covered then).—
That’s my understanding, you may have been looking for some definitive answer from some source- or just be wanting to use the ‘practice videos’ as a sole-reference? -anyway, good luck in your practice.July 17, 2016 at 7:16 am #135803
AnonymousGuestI was simply pointing out that the practice video clip did not include a movement that Bruce demonstrated and taught in the earlier clips, i.e., if you follow the practice clip, you will omit a key transition movement.

AnonymousGuestI agree Colin. I think the choreography of the “Practice” videos should match the choreography of the “Movement” videos because they are there to reinforce what we’ve been taught and also to give us something to work along with in a single, uninterrupted, flow.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this forum, I also use the practice videos, when present, to clarify something I might not have fully understood, or seen, in the movement video.

AnonymousGuestI believe that if Bruce did not correct Kurt in the practice then it does not belong there and got inadvertently included in the initial video.
Of course only Bruce can clear this up and it is an important point to clear up. How does Bruce become aware of this? Jim

AnonymousGuestHello there and thanks for bringing this to our attention. Our models were familiar with Wu and New Yang styles and were learning the Old Yang Style on the fly during filiming as this is the first run of this program and unfortunately missed during editing. It’s recommended to practice the way Bruce demonstrates the form.

AnonymousGuestHI, I think i’m still missing something here as the end of month 14 ends with cross hands, but the start of month 15 starts from end of single whip. ..how did we get from crossed hands to single whip ?
thanks

AnonymousGuestHi Nick- in month 14 it is mentioned that Xhands leads into Return Tiger to Mtn (but not fully shown).. and then in month 15 that is commented also, but only shown in the ‘teaching videos’.. -thus the Xhands (which rotates on the other foot in relation to the prior Xhands, (re Month
ie the front foot of An that becomes the rear foot- if that makes sense, you seem to have caught that, but I wanted to mention here for completeness).. and then although the rotation into that position is the opposite leg and direction, then the Return Tiger to Mtn sequence goes the same directions as previously (ie the R then L ‘sortof CloudHands- Opening Egates style’, then turn around step into Brush Knee, step-lean-reach to peng-rollback.. “grasp sparrow’s tail” to single whip.. [ so that entire end section being the same as in that other section of the form, on videos in month 9.
-I hope that helps, or did you mean another aspect? (I find alot of gems and threads stumbling through the form that revealed themselves trying to get from A to B.. and recog- ah, I’d need to __ to link them… ) cheers

AnonymousGuestBruce is teaching the 36 basic movements in the complete Yang style form.
He is not trying to teach a complete long form (88 to 150 movements) with some of those basic movements repeated multiple times.
Consequently, many transistions are not included.
There are 2 apparent close-ups in the complete form.
The 2nd apparent close-up ends the 2nd section and starts the 3rd section.
Right after the apparent close-up you do Return Tiger to the Mountain (sometimes translated as Return to the Mountain Camp to Retrain).
This is followed by a modified Grasp the Sparrow’s Tail.
Then between the 2nd and 3rd sections you do Diagonal Single Whip.
This makes the transistion to Part the Wild Horse’s Mane a little different. (Your feet are already on a diagonal.)
(Whereas in the previous Single Whip your feet were in-line.)
But Bruce’s mission is not the show all the transitions, just the transistions after the basic 36 movements.
You certainly can’t fault Kurt for not knowing this.
And Bruce couldn’t possibly teach all the transistions in 18 months.
Even a relatively experienced Long Form practitioner like me didn’t realize at the start of the course that Bruce’s plan did not include a step by step instruction on the whole form.
The meat of his instruction is to present the energies and principles (and some variations) of the 36 basic movements.
This is one reason that few players ever learn the whole form; they realize that it will take more than a couple of years to get it.
IMO it’s well worth the effort.
Otherwise you can be satisfied to learn one of the shorter forms–which is why Cheng Man-Ching developed a 37 form, and William C.C. Chen put that into 60 movements.
Heck, the standard 24 short form avoids all this by starting the Form with Part Wild Horse’s Mane, skipping any transistions after Single Whips.
Good Luck.September 22, 2016 at 9:24 am #135810
AnonymousGuestyep got it thanks guys. was just so used to seeing all the movements that did”t use my brain when he says “do return tiger to mountain first” !
..anyway, loving the program and feeling my mind and body transform more and more every day. i do qi gong in the morning, then meditate on the train to work, then tai chi at night. i think the combination of all 3 really complements each other and accelerates the process.
it really is quite amazing,, so thanks
