It may seem simplistic. but the moment I heard Bruce discuss the four basic techniques of Tai Chi I made an association with the Five Elements of Hsing Yi and went straight into focusing on these four in my practice while trying to apply as much attention as I could to learning the rest of the form, at least up to Single Whip.
During the course of my day there are times when I am outside and no one is watching. I take advantage of opportunities to practice Commencement a few times in order to remind myself of myself. I express it this way because the place where I feel most like me is where I am centered and relaxed and aware of the moment.
This is more than enough benefit for me, although it also trains me to be able carry out these actions at the drop of a hat.
