I got a chance to talk to David for a few minutes at the Water Palm Change seminar. David is one of Bruce’s students that learned all of the palm changes from Bruce in weekly classes. I’m hoping other students that attended the weekly classes will jump in and add notes on the energies of the palm changes. It would be ideal if people would only post what they’ve learned from Bruce and give details on which seminar their notes came from. Here’s an example:

Heaven- expansive yang energy: based on BMP. Infinite space expanding: based on Eric Peters notes from 1999 NYC seminar, “Bagau & the I Ching”.

Earth- Immense condensation and nature of manifestation:based on Eric Peters notes from 1999 NYC seminar, “Bagau & the I Ching”.

Wind- The Wind Palm Change develops the spinning techniques of bagua whereby the practitioner’s body spins like a whirlwind: based on Bruce’s BMP marketing release. The Wind Palm Change is also about both the internal and externals winds of the body: based on the BMP.

Thunder- rapid change between yin and yang. Based on student feedback who attended Bruce weekly Bagua classes.

Fire- Spirals of the body coming into a point and activating the spirals everywhere inside your body and outside in your field: based on Bruce’s Bagua Zhang Fire Palm Video on YouTube.

Water- the mixing of yin and yang within the central channel. (Yin and yang are in the same space) This is based on conversation with Bruce at Water Palm change seminar in 2015.

Mountain- two opposed circles. Based on student feedback who attended Bruce’s weekly Bagua classes. Immense sense of stability and being in one point: based on Eric Peters notes from 1999 NYC seminar, “Bagau & the I Ching”.

Lake- two circles out of phase by 180 degrees (implies sequential change). My interpretation at this time.

Transicribed from Bruce Frantzis’ youtube video, “Water Palm Change Promo B”.

“The first one is that it is one of the palm changes that teaches you to connect the etheric field on one side of the body to the other and how to get a flow through.” “The second thing is that in the nature of water, in its motion going around, it is working the way that the etheric body of the arms and the legs is completely connected. The biggest thing or one of the thing big things that the water palm change is known for, and ah, if we take it beyond its whole martial art thing is creating joy within the human being because that is part of the quality of water.”

“The physical motions of the water palm change are somewhat like the second palm change in that it is a yin palm change. In that in all the yang palm changes it is always one hand does something then another hand does it and then another does it. In all of the yin palm changes, it is the power that flowing through your body is flowing through both sides simultaneously and that’s a very big thing. So then rather then having a hand a hand. It is the fact that connection of one side through to the opposite side of the body as well as both of them to be able to come out at the same time is a rather big thing but I think that the basic ability to have the arms and the legs connect is and I think even more than that I think to have the ability to create the space in the mind that water comes out of and the connection of chi to where when you start moving you literally don’t have any sense of separation inside you.”

    More on the Fire Palm…

Transicribed from Bruce Frantzis’ youtube video, “Bagua Zhang Fire Palm Video “. “Its salient qualification is that it really gets the spirals of the body to come down to a point. And, it is about ultimately how you activate all the spiraling currents in yourself and outside yourself. It is naturally matched within the chigung system I teach, the Spiraling Energy Body. It has whole ranges of applications. And rather than having a thousand movements about how you twist this way and twist that way which forms that go out to 64 seperated out. The biggest thing about it it is working how spirals work in very very very tiny ways and how they cause everything to spiral literally both outside your body in your field and every single point inside your body. And then there’s a whole range of martial art applications that go with that. Almost too many to mention.”

Excerpt from BMP INTRODUCTION Learning Bagua: Physical, Energetic and Mental Principles

“BAGUA PLAYS WITH ETHERIC ENERGIES:THUNDER TRIGRAM
When the energetic winds blow very strongly, they create within
them a kind of chi that could be compared to static electricity. If
swirled in certain ways, it can be influenced to erupt into lightening.
In the eight ways of practicing the Single Palm Change, Thunder
can be induced for very powerful shaking and vibration-like
explosions within the physical body. The procedure for becoming
sensitive to and using the electric, energetic quality of this kind
of chi follows a similar path to that of wind. Both are also used in
meditation to uncover, loosen up and resolve blockages in all eight
energy bodies. Thunder shakes all under heaven and earth after
which the gentle rain falls and all grows anew in heaven and earth.”

From the Bagua Water Palm Change course description:

“This course will show how the energy of the I-Ching’s water trigram manifests while walking the circle. Including how softness with tsunami like power can generate while walking the circle. How the water palm’s waves of heavy downward energy can penetrate almost any energetic obstacle. As well as how the upward motions of the palm change, using a very light feel and touch, canseemingly effortlessly raise strong downward power to neutralize it.

The body is primarily composed of many kinds of fluids such as blood, interstitial fluid between cells, lymph and cerebro-spinal fluid. This palm change will work on regulating these fluid flows both for health, marital power and spirituality.”

From the Bagua Fire Palm course description:

“Besides learning the movements, martial applications, and 2-person exercises, the workshop will also focus on:

    Coronal spiraling technique
Spiraling movement from a circle to a point
While spiraling, the energetic transfer between the left and right channel
Creating and finding stillness within movement
While the lead foot faces forward, generating power and useable fighting technique both sideways and backwards.

From the Bagua Mountain Palm Change event description:

“The 7th or Mountain Palm Change of Liu Hung Chieh’s circle walking bagua system. Besides having the qi development and fighting techniques of bagua as an internal martial art, it also includes important elements of the Taoist monastic meditation tradition of bagua.”

“This course will show how the energy of the I-Ching’s mountain trigram manifests while walking the circle. Including a strong emphasis on the spirals that generate movements powerfully and rapidly alternating between tightening down almost to a point and instantly expanding to a full blown movement. It also forms the basis for many of bagua’s kicks and foot throws.

From previous trainings it moves forward expanding the fundamental internal method of inside and outside combine. As well as further developing the lower tantien, legs, feet and etheric root of the body.

Movement is stillness, Stillness is movement. This is a basic principle of Taoist meditation. This palm change emphasizes ways to achieve this lofty goal. Medatative Stillness along the contintuum both while doing he palm change and especially at the very end of the movement, where the mind must remain in a stable meditative state as still as a mountain while the body undergoes massive and sudden escalations in speed.”

    More on the Mountain Palm…

Transcribed from Bruce Frantzis’ Youtube video, “Bagua Mountain Palm Promo “.

“It has several distinguishing characteristics to it. The first one is that your body will be doing as you make the turns into it as your body’s coming down this way then going down that way. The spiraling actions in this are going to be rather noticeable. And, the big trick of this palm change is how to have the spiraling occur and yet have the sense that the inside of your body, the space within your mind, the way your tissues are moving to have an immense sense of stability – just like a mountain. This particular palm change works both the left and right channels in its turning and spinning and coming around, but its most important the way it has the left and right channels activate the central channel. One of the biggest things about it is that when you come out of something where your going to moving and you’re going to be spinning – is that there is a great tendency when you come out of it to longer be aware of where you are and what you are doing. So, obviously, this could cause you to lose balance, but it’s much more not the loss of physical balance that’s the real issue, but the loss of mental and emotional balance. Very often in life we have things that do things to us and then we’re out of balance and we don’t know where we are and we don’t really know where to proceed with. A particular value of in life of this palm change is enabling you when you go through these incredibly powerful and strong switch-up change-ups to be able to come back to a stability point almost instantly. So, in terms of fighting applications this has a lot do about how you go from the outside to the inside of a person. It also has a lot to do with throws. It has a lot to do with kicks. It has lots to do with kick defenses. And this particular action is the way arms get captured and your spinning someone around to cut through them. And it just has this ability to tighten yourself up and when you make contact with a person’s body to get them moving in two or three directions at once.”

Complete transcription from Bruce Frantzis’ youtube video, “Water Palm Change Promo B”.

“Hello I’m Bruce Frantzis and on June 5th to 7th I’ll be teaching a Bagua workshop in El Cerrito Berkley. And, in that workshop I’ll be dealing with the Water Palm change. There are several things about the Water Palm Change that are useful to recognize. The first one is that it is one of the palm changes that actually teaches you how to connect the etheric field of one side of your body to the other and get a flow though through them.

The second thing is that in the nature of water in its motion of going around. It’s working the way that the etheric body of your arms and your legs are completely connnecting. The biggest thing or one of the big things that the Water Palm Change is known for and if we take it beyond the whole martial art thing, is creating joy within a human being because that’s part of the quality of water and I’ll be working on that a bit.

The physical motions of the Water Palm Change are somewhat like the second palm change and it’s a yin palm change. In that in all the yang palm changes, it is always one hand does something then another hand does it then another hand does it. In all the yin palm changes, it’s the power that’s flowing through your body is flowing through both sides simultaneously. And that’s a very big thing. So than rather than having a hand, hand it is the fact that that connection of one side through to the opposite side of your body as well as both of them being able to come out at the same time is a rather big thing.

So, the mo.., I would not even say that the physical motions of the Water Palm Change are that difficult. I really don’t think they are. But, I think that the basic ability to have the arms and the legs connect is, and I think even more than that, I think to have the ability to create the space in the mind that water comes out of and the connection of chi to where when you start moving, you literally don’t have the sense of any separation inside you. I think that’s rather valuable for both for martial arts and for and for meditation or for anything else you want to use it for.

So anyway, I’ll be doing this in Berkley and the fighting applications of the Water Palm Change are pretty wild. That’s all I can tell you. You are playing with the etheric body. Everything that for example that happens in martial arts where you’re sticking to someone’s body you are touching someone’s body in some way or another, the Water Palm Change personifies the energy that makes that possible. So in that sense it is very useful for people that do Tai Chi and it is very useful for people that do Hsing-I that this whole descending power and like and just like a tsunami that when it crashes it comes up and it goes down. These are big things that are part of the Water Palm Change.

So, anyway hope to see you in Berkley. I don’t get a chance to teach it that often and it will be my great pleasure to teach it. Thank you.”

From the Bagua Lake Palm Change course description:

“This is the 8th or Lake Palm Change of Liu Hung Chieh’s circle walking bagua system. Besides having the qi development and fighting techniques of bagua as an internal martial art, it also includes important elements of the Taoist monastic meditation tradition of bagua.”

From the Bagua Lake Palm Change course details:

“This course will show how the energy of the I-Ching’s Lake trigram manifests while walking the circle. Including a strong emphasis on the spirals that generate circularity in the physical body. Creating powerful flexibility in the torso, waist and arms making the body capable of extreme degrees of movement.

From previous trainings it moves forward expanding the fundamental internal method of inside and outside combine. As well as further developing the lower tantien, spine, and central channel of energy in the body. The martial applications of this palm change integrate the previous 7 palm changes and fills in all the foundations of the sideways and backward strikes of ba gua.

Movement is stillness, Stillness is movement. This is a basic principle of Taoist meditation. This palm change emphasizes ways to achieve this lofty goal. By finding a center of stillness in the middle of a cyclone of energy and movements. The Lake palm change is also know as Joy and Joyous in the I-Ching. Regular practice is known to increase the spontaneous happiness, enthusiasm and appreciation within practitioners.”
