I’m working my way through the Bagua Mastery program again. I was struck by the insert titled “Bruce’s Experience with Safety Procedures”. I’ve been working on much deeper twisting than I’ve ever done. This segment really speaks to problems that can occur if you don’t fully understand the material and spiraling in particular. What is striking is that Bruce says he misunderstood Hung’s teaching for years and so did every other student of Hung including one of his best senior students. Bruce had the big picture but missed some important details which caused him personal pain and injury. He learned, trained, and taught spiraling incorrectly until Liu Hung Chieh filled in the important, missing details. This is quite disconcerting when you consider both the quality of Bruce’s teachers and his dedication to the art.
So as we progress through the program we need to remember Bruce’s cautionary tale and be good to our bodies and minds.
