    Hello everyone,

In the demonstration for slanted flying, Bruce starts with the left leg forward. However, in the martial application and in the beginner and intermediate demonstration, they start with the right leg forward.

If we end repulse monkey after three reps. We will end with the right leg forward and go from there to slanted flying.

I was wondering which one is correct or perhaps both should be practiced.

    Thanks.

I just noticed this yesterday as well. It’s an odd discrepancy, and leaves what the form is in question. Even though I’ve not ever gotten a response from Energy Arts on any question I’ve asked, nor seen an “official” answer to anyone else’s, I really ask that the moderators put this through to someone who knows and will answer – Or, if someone subscribing to the circle does know / have an authoratative opinion that they please respond.

So: How does the actual Old Yang form do this move? An even number of repetitions (2,4?) of Repulse Monkey and then into Slanted Flying as Bruce goes into detail about, or an odd number (3?) and then into Slanted Flying as demonstrated in the practice videos or as Bruce demos in the martial applications video – but is never actually discussed? Or both? It seems really odd to go into so much detail on how to go into the move, but then set it up so that it can’t be done that way – and never talk at all about how to go into it the way it is set up. Perhaps Bruce and others are just so familiar with this that the gap in explanation doesn’t register, but for us (me?) who aren’t it’s pretty glaring.

In the Repulse Monkey movements video, Bruce originally demonstrates 4 repetitions when describing the leg movements. But that’s the only indication of how many repetitions are done, until the practice videos, which only do 3. The martial arts applications section of Slanted Flying suggest 3, other forms of Tai Chi that I’m aware of do 3 reps (though I have to say I’ve not done any Yang style Tai Chi for over 25 years so my familiarity is limited to say the least).

It might not be important, but it does seem like a rather large variation to just leave un-talked about and glossed over, especially when so much focus is placed on seeming small variations between styles. And, for me at least, it is a big consideration since I’ve got no one else to ask locally. I can, of course, choose whichever way I feel good about, but I’m very curious about what the actual form is, as well.

    Thanks – Peter

I noticed the same thing while watching the videos and am curious about the reply.

    Hi All,

In EATC Yang Style Month 10, Session 18 Bruce demonstrates a variation on the Slanted Flying movement that would occur when doing an even number of repetitions (2,4,6, etc…) of the preceding movement Repulse Monkey. The core Old Yang Style form is done using 3 repetitions of Repulse Monkey resulting in the Slanted Flying movement as shown in the beginner practice (Session 30) and intermediate practice (Session 31) videos. The variation shown in this clip is used for training purposes and in some longer Old Yang Style tai chi forms.

To clear up any confusion we have added this explaination to Lesson 18.

Thank you for your interest, participation and questions.

Bruce does his best to answer questions related to your training here:

Most questions asked are answered directly by Bruce in a video post in a subsquent month of the program.

    Kind regards,

    Energy Arts Team

    Hi All,

We found the video lesson of Bruce doing the Flying Slanted movement after 3 reps of Repluse Monkey. There were some audio issues with the clip so it was stored in an incorrect folder. We posted it here:

    Kind regards,
