In the Wind Palm I’m learning to separate the physical and etheric bodies and have them function both in concert and independently. The end result is that I’m able to be aware of the inside and the outside at the same time. This has change both the way I think about the tai chi space and opened access to the next set of 8 palm changes or yin palms.

I’ve talked about this before when I was focused on neigung, but it is coming up again in the context of the physical and etheric bodies. Basically, I can expand or absorb anywhere in the physical and etheric bodies.

That opens up new ways to execute the palm changes and it can completely change how you think about and manifest the palm changes. For example, the Heaven Palm Change is about yang expansion. So, we close then open, close then open. In order for it to be an expansion all the time, I open from inside the body to the out, then I expand the etheric field toward the center to close. That’s a very different way of looking at closing.

In the Double Palm Change, what happens when you add absorption to the equation. What if you pull or absorb everything into the periphery? The etheric field (outside the body) absorbs the energy. The energy still moves from center to periphery but I guarantee your experience of what is happening is very different. Now when I close I absorb into the center deep inside the body. That’s what most of us do.

But what happens if I absorb into the center inside the body AND expand from the periphery toward the center simultaneously. Is this the lessor or greater yin? Reverse the whole thing and do you have the lessor of greater yang? Is this the basis of the four corners? Is there another name for this?

So, I’m suggesting that this way of looking at opening and closing may be the basis of the 16 palms. I’m not sure but all of this becomes possible, tangible, and very real at some point.

Remember there are only two forces: the expansive yang force and the force that absorbs and let’s it all in.
