Bruce summarizes what all of Bagua is trying to do Module 17 video 2 at 2:12 – 4:30. In the same video from 10:02 to 10:27, Bruce starts to speak to what is unique to the Lake Palm Change.

If you understand the summary part, you’ll understand why the Heaven Palm Change is named after Heaven and why the Earth Palm Change is named after Earth. All of the others play with mixing Heaven and Earth in specific ways with the goal of “opening” the space within you. So, all of them can be used to target specific areas and help you gain access to release whatever is bound or polarized there.

The first 5 minutes of Module 17 video 8 is probably the best explanation of the Lake Palm and what it’s goal is.

Everything I currently do is just my strategy for setting up what’s really supposed to be the Lake Palm Change. Unfortunately, this setup is directly contrary to the goal. It is literally preventing it. Joy can not be contrived. It either spontaneously arises or it doesn’t. And trying to make it happen, makes it even less likely. It has to be relaxed into.

So, listen to Bruce’s 5 minute explanation. That’s probably the best verbal explanation you can get. Practice and hope you get lucky.

    “lucky”?

When the top yin line changes to yang, the top gua changes to Heaven.
    Heaven over Lake.

Lake over Lake has changed to Heaven over Lake
which creates “Joyful alternates to Fulfillment (10).”

“The Yao Text does not mention good fortune or misfortune, but it does warn that joyfulness is induced in a wrong direction.”
Huang, Alfred, “The Complete I Ching,” page 456.

    “Joy”?

There is a Tibetan practice called “tonglen.”
    Giving creates Joy.
    “tong” means “sending out.”
    “len” means “receiving.”

    Giving and receiving.

    Giving must be unconditional, wholehearted.
But we don’t just run up to someone on the street and say,
‘Hey, take my candy and I’ll take the Kleenex in your back pocket.’

“tonglen” practice is sincerely putting others first–by placing letting go and receiving on the medium of the breath.
Trungpa, Chogyam, “Training the Mind and Cultivating Loving-Kindness,” pages 46-50.

Trying to make it happen will not work. Period.

The Lake Palm Change is practicing tonglen. Joy.

It makes us aware of the “tai chi space,” wuji.
Then everything emanates from this center.

I’m applying all 8 Palm Changes into my Yang Style Tai Chi.
    For examples:
Initiate “Single Whip” by doing the Lake Palm Change,
then complete the “Single Whip” posture.

Initiate “Lifting Hands” by doing the Lake Palm Change,
jump into the Fire Palm Change,
then complete the “Lifting Hands” posture.

Just to throw in -what drew me to, and holds me in, BaguaZhang was the feeling of joy that arose in me watching, and arises as I see more of what it-is…

(so much in the “basic” (? :) step as in the BGM, how the silk-pulls and the taffy-compress-stretches, the swirls in the air form movement), -not as imagined or need to think-make-it, but merely discover, then don’t block it, ride it.

(and it is a strange sort of tiring workout, to gently-slowly step, and feel ‘work’… I still “step-slo-mo” which Bagua doesn’t do :) as Bruce says, .. but the changes that occur inside are still faster than smooth if I go fast.. or just blindly-auto step..

[ie step L and step R- full circ up-down completes and flip-changes 8 times, shift-under and mud-stepping, folding and the pressure changes that creates and is driven by.. etc. just from the steps, add changes in the kwa, and torso… multiplies] <>

anyway- but it seems what can be included, without “reaching’ to include”- as that gets jumpy, and disconnects from experience..

    ===============
    – I think of it like, if you do ChiGungTuiNa on another person ( ~moving another’s flesh to trigger a feeling of E-flow, for those that don’t know the CGTN term )

if you try and go too-fast, ie contrive-force, just do-it (Nike :) then you leave them behind, you need to feel the response in them, and move-just a bit ahead.. if turn-twisting.. (or KaiHe- opening-closing), need surf that (ride the wave, at the same time as you are generating that wave.. )..
~ Likewise, do in yourself.. feel not-get-ahead, not lose connection, as you generate that wave and flow-ride upon it (even set-sail to the winds)…

    ***********
anyway, as you say “can not be contrived” (so seems a limitation- as cannot make it.. but is a plus- as since you can’t.. rather you don’t “need” to force it.. just set-up the conditions.. ie and it arises ‘effort-less-ly’ ? maybe…

    just a thought..

The Lake Palm Change is literally using the lower and upper to open the middle. I phrase this more generically rather than saying the lower and upper guas open the middle gua because it is more universal than that. When you understand how the Lake Palm opens the middle gua, you can apply the method equally to the limbs and sections of the limbs. You end up back at this simple model I posted about in another thread.

At this point I’ve got a solid, physical interpretation of the 8 palms. I see the learning progression very clearly. I know exactly how they build one on top of another. I even think I grasp all 16 parts of the 16 part neigung. I’m sure there are missing pieces but all the major pieces are in place.

I suspect this is the end of the jing phase. I need to train everything to gain a level of mastery and complete what they are capable of, but there really doesn’t seem to be much more to be done.

I’ll probably move into the yin side and eventually work these from the yin absorption side working out the 16 palm changes.

I think the mind games are next, but we have zero info on how to approach the next phase and for the first time I don’t have a clue where this is going. So, I’ll train what I know.
