Give a historical perspective of what Yang Lu Chan taught to the security forces in the Palace. They were more concerned about people with weapons; than empty hands. How did these security personnel train; daily dozen; grappling; weapons use etc.
Tai Chi Chuan as we perceve it seems to have been taught to the select group in private.
What he taught the Royal Family was a different need they had.
