AnonymousGuestHi all. So I’m reading the book of the same title and in it the author mentions that the meditations/disciplines can be dangerous if done incorrectly. He says that if any side effects occur, a good idea is to consult with a Taoist yoga teacher. So I’ve been looking for some in my city and thought I’d also post on here.
Has anyone read the book and is anyone familiar with the practices? Anything I should know? I’m new to this and willing to learn/commit my only concern/blockage at this point is that I might cause some irreparable damage so I’m hesitant to go forward.
Thanks in advance.

AnonymousGuestHi Adrian,
I haven’t read this specific book but I’ll comment on the general question.
Yes, if you do these practices incorrectly you can do yourself a great deal of harm. Bruce spent some time working in clinics in China and saw many people that had practiced chi gung incorrectly and caused themselves all sorts of problems. Some of which could be easily fixed and others which couldn’t. There is a term in Chinese for people who become sick due to inproper practice of chi practices, “Zou Hou Ru Mo“ or “Fire goes the Devil”
In the West, Kundalini Pyscosis, is a term used to describe the problems that can arise with certain types of Indian spirtual practices.
In Bruce’s book, The Power of Internal Martial Arts, he talks about an internal martial arts master that died when his lungs hemoraged from doing chi practices improperly.
I think this is true of most practices, if you do them wrong you can hurt yourself. Even an exercise as simple as a push up, if done incorrectly, can cause you harm. On the level of the body, most people are famaliar with the signs that they are causing damage. They know that if their arm hurts, they should stop doing pushups. They know what a muscle strain feels like and they know the remedies.
The problem with chi practices, is that you are not famaliar with all the signals and you won’t know how to react to them. If you do a practice, and you get a funny ache in your heart, what does that mean? Does it mean you should keep practicing and work through it? Or is it a sign that you should stop? The problems come, because you don’t really know. It’s not famaliar territory for you. Hence, why you need an experianced teacher to help you through it.
Hope this helps,

AnonymousGuestIf you have a chance, I’d recommend any of Bruce’s senior instructors. They’ve been studying this material for a long time and have a lot of experiance.

If you’re not near any of them, then I’d recommend checking out all the other instructors in Bruce’s system
