From my other Qi Gong practices I learned before, I got into the habit of using my perineum, or rather the Hui Yin when breathing. I am just working through Bruce’s book on Opening the Energy Gates, and he mentions belly, sides, lower and upper back for breathing, but never the Hui Yin. Is there any reason for that? Could there be a problem using it? For me it comes easy and naturally to use it.

Does anybody here have some thoughts or advice on this?

    Hi Markus,

Bruce mentioned that in the Spiraling Energy Body training this summer.

He said that the stuff he teaches does not work the Hui Yin. You should keep it soft and open. Also when breathing you should not let the breath go right down into the bottom of the abdomen.

I’ll dig out my notes to see if I have anything else about it…

    Thanks for the reply. :-)

So that is interesting. Is there a special reason why the breath should not go down that far?

    Hi again,

I haven’t had a chance to look at my notes yet but I remember the Hui Yin stuff being classed as a fire practice and, although Bruce studied fire practices for years, he doesn’t teach that stuff because of the potential for problems.

I’ll have time to look at my notes this weekend…

To followupon Trevor’s comments- I think there is a difference in the wording of 1) “using X in breathing” whether attention is upon it as breathe, vs 2) if the breathing Compression (of the diaphram moving the fluids in the ab-guts.. which can reach further down into the intenstines (front-back and sides- and to reach further with that compression down into the “pelvic-floor” one could have pressure against the top of the sit-bones.. which would have a movement-pressure of the perinium), vs 3) moving in coordination with (for ex there are chigung that teach moving both the sphincters along with breathing.. [these are ‘not’ the perinuem or huiyin] .. there is another chigung system that teaches contract these closed as in.. and let-go on ex, they coordinate, but aren’t driven by the breathing itself- if that makes sense).

The first can be used such that Breathing is a tool acting on the part referenced (so not quite the same), the second, not a good idea, perhaps the first/second could be confused? … and Third.. coordination, this is like Opening/Closing (Kai-He) coordinating with reaching out with arms/retracting arms [those 2 components can be related but are not at root, open-close without arm move, or close as reach out, open as retract reachin.. or just move arms without open/close.. these 2 components, with or without Breathing being related.. etc….. (the specific use of sphincters or Huiyin to drive torso energy currents.. espec “Micro-circ” so-called… the use of the Kwa in the Earts system is much more integrated and powerful and less unbalancing).

I think that might tie what Trevor wrote of Bruce’s teachings to what “I think” (not sure) the original-post was referring to which might be a bit different reference to “use of” huiyin in breathing… I hope this adds something- luck
