In the beginning of the I Chuan DVDs you show us a way to use chi to cause the arms to rise upward. I have no problem doing that. Is this principle the same as “Peng” in Tai Chi? i.e. can I use what you teach us in the I Chuan DVD to cause a rising energy while doing Tai Chi? If so, then are the first four energies of Tai Chi done by raising the chi and controlling it with my intention?
I do this and it seems to work OK, but wanted to touch bases to be sure.

I think you probably want to avoid mixing the terminology of I Chuan and Tai Chi, since Bruce always notes how his teachers emphasized keeping them separated. The energy that moves you arms up while doing I Chuan is certainly related to the four energies of Tai Chi, peng in particular, but to say that it’s the same is an oversimplification.

I think the main thing you can take from your I Chuan practice into Tai Chi is the feeling of chi moving your body rather than muscular effort. I try to get the same feeling in my Tai Chi, but also aim to experience the four energies of Tai Chi as their own thing, the way Bruce describes them in the DVDs.
