Hi All. Yet another deep and fascinationg practice! I’m wondering how people are feeling the relative hardness and softness of their breath. E.g., does it help to notice that you can ‘hear’ your breath and that the sound (felt from the inside)?

I’ve gotten to the point where I recognize my breath creating some tension. So I’m working on softening this tension. I’m not sure if this is what Bruce meant in the lesson 10.
What did you mean by sound? Sound created by air passing through the body systems?

Hi Igor. I remember once hearing that a relaxed breath is soft and makes no readily audible sound. Listening to other people breath tells you whether they are breathing hard or soft. However, when listening to my own breath, I hear it through my body (airways and skull), rather than externally through my outer ears. Does that inner sound give an indication of the softness of my breath? It must do, but I don’t know how to ‘calibrate’ the sound, i.e., what is hard and what is soft?

Hi, Colin and Igor. Bruce’s Taoist Breathing CDs are a really good resource for this, I’ve been working with them for years and have found them really helpful for developing a soft, natural breath. I think he assumes interested folks will look for other resources when they encounter something they want to know more about, that way, he doesn’t have to repeat a lot of basic instructions.

I think I know what you mean by hearing the feeling. This is my interpretation as well that we are supposed to not feel the breathing/air passage with any sensors we have at our disposal. I keep getting that tension feedback from my diaphragm up the spine; this is the stage I’m on. Occasionally I’ll get into state I don’t feel the breath at all, but those moments are very short and rare. I feel ‘suspended’ those times, if it makes sense.

When did Chapter 10 come out? I missed getting an email about it.

Chapter 11 continues the breathing emphasis started in Chap. 10.. After listening to Chapter 10 again it might be helpful to make a 20 minute segment of Bruce’s vocal sounds. Would this be helpful? Would there be any reason not to listen to these sounds for an extended time?
