Are these the same thing, or is I Chuan a different kind of practice ?

I hope this might help: I Chuan is a standing-type practice, many layers of internal-type practices upon a set of stances (8 core or so, most seem to be more weight on one foot, so not equal 50/50, but not a large stance, like Santi.. sort of like a stationary boxing-type stance, arms raised).
If you mean “standing practice” in terms of Energy Gates standing.. they are different, but some of the fundamentals are related (as both are neigung, while I don’t believe the Egates are directly referenced in the main IChuan schools).. and even in Energy Gates other stances are used (beyond arms hanging at sides, palms to be back) once the ability to connect with chi is developed… [but any position besides that with the arms: doesn’t focus upon releasing the contraction in the armpit-clavicle-shoulder blades, as well as can distort inward focus.]

To access the full relaxation and thus sung-state, to allow sinking and thereby filling occurs (not triggered), thus fully let-go has to shift (underlying “habits” and holding- even the “mind” is usually tight and disruptive when trying to look-listen… thus any ‘doing’ can distract from that let-go.. and Ichuan (as a system) is more martially-based.. and starts (from the get-go) as doing this and that..

So different practice in terms of purpose and focus, and the “state” of the practice (what one is doing ‘inside’ even if what one is doing ‘outside’ may look similar to an observer).. and they can overlap, espec with some developmental-basis in each.. (beware just blurring the two together)

    Thanks Taokua.
It would be good to hear more about the difference in the 2 practices, in terms of what their goals are and how they function differently energetically.
For instance I have seen in I Chuan there is a drawing up of energy and its distribution. What is the goal of this, what is the goal of I Chuan and what is the goal of Standing dissolving ?

standing and dissolving is to let chi progress down your body and rejuvenate yourself until it flow out the bottom of the feet. That is about all.

I chuan is all about fighting. You stand and you hold your fist.
It is a form of internal art which is also healthy for mind and body, mainly because internal energy work is base on holistic principle.
