In the middle of week 4 I developed a lung and ear infection which meant sitting up to meditate was not an option for a few days. Now my head is still full of fluff so finding sources of distraction is difficult. However if I concentrate on my breath down to my lungs I can easily feel the plug of infection. I’m wondering if until I’m better whether I should just try dissolving the infection during my meditation session.

I have to deal with some health issues from time to time myself, especially lungs. I usually rely a bit on my instincts in these cases, and if you already know dissolving and feel like it might be the right thing to do at this time, there’s no harm in doing it for awhile until you are ready to go back and work on the material.

Isn’t dissolving supposed to be the thing you learn after this meditation intro, and this course is like prerequisite to inner dissolving? (as spoken in the audio?) I thought you cannot learn dissolving until you go through this course. If one knew dissolving already why go through this course?

Ah, it’s a good question you ask! I’ve been doing Bruce’s inner and outer dissolving practices since I started tai chi, about 14 or so years ago. He’s been teaching it for awhile, but this is the first time he has offered a course in the preliminaries. When you study with Bruce for awhile, you will notice that it’s not necessarily a linear system. All the practices build in an inter-related way. When I started doing the inner dissolving practice, I found it difficult, and that inspired me to seek out some foundation practices on my own. I did some basic Buddhist concentration and mindfulness practices, and that helped a lot.

I think one of the reasons Bruce started this program now is because he is thinking of offering meditation as an instructor training for the first time. So there is a need for anyone interested to kind of know where they’re at, and to make sure everyone has the same foundation to start with.

The inner dissolving practices are no joke – everyone is different but personally I have found them as challenging as they are rewarding. Even after working with this technique for 14 years, I would never dream of skipping the opportunity to start from square one again, and take this course.

I hope this clears up some confusion!
