AnonymousGuestI typically do a set of dragon and tiger or energy gates before meditation. Does anyone have any other methods that they use as a warm-up besides a full chi gung, tai chi, etc. set that would be about as effective but take less time?

AnonymousGuestI am presently checking tibetan using much, also for distant healing, the force of empty fist in a cosmic perspective.
Master Zi Sheng Wang (Chiyan Rangdro), a Chinese by the way, includes approved by Nyingma Dzogchen Master Khenpo Munsel Rinpoche most simple some one finger Zen Shaolin Qigong.
But for Warming up Tibetan Buddhist Qigong THREE PALMS TOGETHER suffices:

AnonymousGuestDepends on the time. If I don’t have time and/or tired I might do just a general warm-up like joints rotation from the head to the feet, takes 5-7 min. Any stretches are good for me, any set of 8 pieces of brocade will do. I use the one from K.L.Chuen book. I don’t do meditation without a physical warm up, that’s for sure.

AnonymousGuestThese comments are making me think. I usually just sit down and do some very light stretching and settling exercises before I start meditating. I do all my physical practices, including a long warm up, after sitting. My whole morning practice takes a couple of hours and I’m always trying to maximize the time I spend.

AnonymousGuestWell, the idea how I understand it is that when you move/warm up you get your blood and other biological stuff circulated, agitated, it’s like heating up the motor of a car. Qi and blood are related. Younger students might not notice the effect of warming up, but generally after 30-ish YO one would need more and more movements to get things going.

AnonymousGuestThe differences in opinion depend if you understand warm up as simple gymnastics or as a building up of inner energies as proclaimed by Dragon & Tiger and Energy Gates Qigong. Even rotating the knees in both clockwise directions preparing I Quan or Lam Kham Chuens Standing like a tree is already much more as simple gymnastics joining in an energy column heaven and earth by inner energies.
Spending to much energies into heating up gymnastics wastes especially for older people them lacking afterwards in the meditation for building up better presence and awareness.
But a good preparing exercise wakes Qi up like a pre-exercise in Tai Chi moving by Chi even the blood and does not consume and waste it. But younger people may better balance their surplus and sexual energies by more and quicker movements as in the fighting styles over hours.

AnonymousGuestI usually practice ‘Gods Playing in the Clouds’ before my meditation practice. I have seen the set described as a qigong bridge to meditation, and as shen gong. I practice Dragon and Tiger ahead of meditation if I’m looking towards a more healing focus.

AnonymousGuestI usually do a standing pose for about 8 minutes or until I feel my energy zapping down my entire body. And I wait until my breathing slows down and relaxes my heart and chest area enough to feel something sink into my lower dantien. I feel a little shiver of electrical current entering from the crown of my head and releasing downward throughout my body. Then I continue with my seated meditation.
