I listened to Bruce’s introduction about seated meditation and its benefits for spiritual awareness. I have so much more experience with Yang Style and Wu style tai chi and qigong practices that I have practiced standing meditations, wuji stance and the santi stances for about 9 years.

I have just been doing a seated meditation for these first 2 weeks of the program. However, I heard Bruce say either seated or standing in his introduction and practice for weeks 3 and 4.

I would like to experiment with some standing using these breathing concepts but wonder if that would not be more confusing and not recommended.

Hi Joan. From my perspective for this foundational work the important thing is to be attentive to counting the breath whilst recognising what else is going on, with the complementary focus stuff added in for weeks 3 & 4 – whether seated or standing (Bruce gave some indicative alternatives for how long you might sit or stand). Perhaps try standing and sitting, and if you findi it confusing go back to just a sitting.

I think I’m going with 20 minutes of seated until the meditation “habit” is ingrained. Then after a month or so add 10 minutes of standing. I work standing so the opportunity to sit is welcome.

That might be different for someone whose job entails sitting?

I have previous experience both in sitting and standing (e.g. outer dissolving). I actually do whatever feels best each day, sometimes I sit, sometimes I stand. I find myself standing more often than I had expected because (1) it makes me less sleepy and (2) it’s a good qigong for the body too, so if I don’t have time for my moving qigong then, I definitely do standing.
