Hi, I’m trying to practice outer dissolving and having problems locating physical blockages when I start scanning. A lot of my tension feels like mental/emotional, which also confuses me. What is the difference between the two. Can you shed some light on these areas please. Rebecca

Hi, Rebecca. I’m not a certified teacher or senior student so take what I write here with a grain of salt. I think all of us who do this type of Taoist meditation struggle with exactly what you wrote about: how to separate all the various sensations and really know what you’re feeling. The only thing I can say is that, with a lot of practice I’ve learned to recognize which type of energy I’m dealing with. There’s no trick and no secret – just a lot of sitting. Each type of energy has a particular quality that, with practice, you learn to recognize. The Training Circle has been very useful for me, as was the Taoist Meditation Circle. I was also lucky enough to do a week long retreat with Bruce several years ago. I recommend all these things.

    Good luck!

Thank you Matthew for your response to my question. It is very reassuring to know that with practice I should be able to get in touch with the different energy sensations. I am new to this type of meditation and as with all these practices, changes don’t happen overnight. I think I may join the meditation circle and put more of my focus into that.

    Many thanks

I found that following the directions of the meditation circle and taking those 16 months to really set the foundation totally transformed my practice. The practices start out very basic and end up fairly advanced, leaving you well prepared to do inner dissolving. I practiced six days a week, every morning, and it was probably the most well spent time I’ve ever passed. I stopped trying any other mediation practices, but I kept up my moving practices, mostly qigong and Bagua.

Now, the practices in the training circle are taking me to the next level. I think it’s incredible and deep stuff. It may not be the path for everyone but it has been a great one for me.

I wish you the best of luck in your own practice.
