I have recently begun learning Energy gates qigong and couldn’t help but notice similarities between scanning and standing meditation; especially when focusing on various parts of the body. I want to learn both without one interfering with the other.

I think they are quite similar, if not the same thing. They should not interfere with each other. If you still have questions, I might be able to elaborate more if you tell me more details of how you are doing the scanning, and what you think might be causing them to interfere with each other.

………I think our Meditation Circle exercises are focused on developing mindful sensitivity and awareness in preparation for deeper levels of meditation work – the ‘get out of your head and into your body’ schdule, whilst broadly comparable to qigong scanning is different in detail – I’m not sure how much information is on the Energy Arts website, my understanding is that qigong scanning is a preparation for ‘outer dissolving’ whilst taoist meditation includes ‘inner dissolving’ as a core practice. For what it’s worth, I suggest keeping Energy Gates practice separate from meditation,

Yes, as Colin said, definitely keep them as separate practices. The inner dissolving of Taoist meditation does require the mind to be sensitve to much more subtle layers than does outer dissolving, I believe. As long as you keep the practices separate, they should compliment each other.

At this point I dont feel as though they are interfering with each other but the first couple of times I was scanning I felt like “hey, this feels alot like standing meditation”. I tend to practice DT chi gung then 10 min of scanning before sitting down for meditation. If anything scanning has been a great segue. Thanks guys.

Yes, I think scanning is usually done standing, moving the mind down through the body and taking inventory of sensations and certain points. Bruce outlines the important points in his “Energy Gates” book. These are not necessarily acupuncture points, but places to pay attention to where energy is likely to get stuck. I think scanning is done to get your mind to be able to feel your body, as a prep for the outer dissolving practice – which deals mainly with blockages in the first two bodies, physical and chi. I think we are spending more time on each area in this group in preparation for actual meditation, or inner dissolving. This deals with the other energy bodies, starting with the third, or emotional energy body. The higher the energy body, the more subtle the sensations become, so I would assume that this is why we are spending so much time paying attention to each area.

Outer dissolving, usually done standing, is still considered to be in the realm of qi gong, and not necessarily meditation. I hope my take on scanning was accurate – it’s been awhile since I went through that part of training. I’m blowing the cobwebs off some info here…Does that sound like what you’re doing for the scanning, Kevin? I hope this explanation helps some.

Thank you for the explanation, Catherine. I’m pretty much a beginner at this along with Joker. A lot of what is here sounds Greek sometimes. You made that very clear and lucid.

I’m halfway through the second month doing 20 minutes seated in the AM and 20 minutes standing in the evening. Monkey mind is nearly as active as ever, but Qigong and Taiji practice seems to be much improved from what it was when this started.

Enjoying the trip even if I don’t know where we’re going.

Yes, thanks catherine. Im working down from head to toe, but Im not focusing on the specific points right now. The first step as I understood was to move down the body cataloging the different areas where there are sensations of tension contraction or something doesnt feel right. The goal now is to keep focused whilst moving my attention. Refering to the book turns out Im SINKING chi first (oops!) then scanning then dissolving. He’s broken them down so its easier to learn then you combine once all learned.
Hey thanks for everyones comments, eventhough this thread may have been better placed under the chi gung forum.

@joker90hd – No worries, if I got laid off and got a computer virus to boot, I’d probably be a little grumpy, too. ;) Hope things improve for you! While these qi gong things are a little off the path of our meditation circle, sometimes it’s good to know a little about the bigger picture, to put things into perspective.
