Hi my name is Paul Jones. I have been doing Tai Chi on and off since the mid ’90s, but as I moved around Australia a bit didn’t get to stick with any teacher for very long until I learned the Cheng (WuTan) style (Wu Style long form) from an Instructor in Cairns Queensland. After reading Bruce’s books I realised that I had only been shown the external form and very much Fire style QiGong and started to try to modify the forms with what I could pick up from his books and videos as I couldn’t afford to travel overseas to his seminars. Unfortunately even though I was a reasonably experienced Tai Chi learner I couldn’t really piece together more than the surface of the short Wu form from Bruce’s video at the time as it was not broken down as in this Program.
I also studied Qigong with a couple of Korean teachers and had some Qi development happen and some interesting energy experiences. However this Qigong was also very hard on the body and also seemed to be again Fire style Qigong and very difficult to keep up practicing the awkward and extremely uncomfortable stances used to build and concentrate the Qi.
I had over the years been a very competitive amateur table tennis player and also a professional coach of the sport for some years and was finding the twisting and repetitive movements were causing strains and injuries and when I went to Korea last year and started training even more then my lower and middle back started to protest and for the last 3 months I have had to ease off the competition and training and see acupunturists/chiropractors and go to steam baths (Mokyoktang) to try to rehabilitate the back. I even learnt to coach table tennis with my other hand in order to try and balance the back and also modify my drive action. However I realised that I needed to start training Tai Chi again (I hadn’t practiced seriously for about 12 months) and also I needed to learn the internal structure to rehabilitate my back and unwind some of the chronic tension in my shoulders, neck and back as my system must have been tense for a long time and was overloaded recently to where the weaknesses could not be covered over any longer.
I will probably be a bit sporadic in my posts but hope I can learn and contribute to this training and look forward to being a part of this Tai Chi community.
