Im finding it very difficult to do a 100% completely silent exhale on the flicks during any of the movements that require it. Can anyone share some tips or insights on this?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

This is Dan Winter, I work with Bill at his school, Toward Harmony Tai Chi & Qigong. We spoke about your question and he explained that while a completely silent explosive exhale through the nose can be very difficult at first, there are stages one progresses through on the way to acheiving it. First, you do an audible breath through the mouth, until you can learn to silently through your mouth. Pursing your lips can help to learn to breath through your mouth in a controlled way. Then you can practice breathing audibly through your nose, until you can acheive a silent exhale through the nose. This may take some time. It is important not to rush the process, but to take the time to learn to do each stage in a relaxed way.

    Thanks for the reply.

Is the inaudible exhale just as explosive as the audible?

Is it required to be able to do an inaudible explosive exhale to certify as a level 1 DT instructor ?

    Thanks again,

    Hi Kevin,

The answer to your first question is basically yes, you are going for the same quality of breath, without the sound. However, it is important to note that there is a different quality of exhale for each movement (except for 6 and 7, which are the same). For instance, movement 2 has a a soft exhale – not very explosive. You can read more about this in the books by Bruce Frantzis. Volume 1 discusses the qualities of breath to some extent, and Volume 2 goes into more detail.

No, you do not have to be able to do this to become a level 1 instructor. You pretty much just need to be able to do what is covered in the Volume 1 book.
