    What affect does practicing standing Qigong on a surface not in contact with the ground (e.g., deck 4 inches to 3 feet high, or the 2nd story of a building) have on the grounding effect? Is there any way to mitigate the loss of contact with the earth?

    Depending upon what is meant by “in contact with” ‘the ground’…. that may seem to literally mean, touching (with your skin? what if wearing shoes, or even socks? -not touching).. and touching the thin-layer of dirt on the surface.. or concrete? (what about a layer of sod/grass over concrete, which might have a sewer pipe under it.. thus on top of a ‘space’?)
    If the electrical-meaning. ‘the ground’ is a grounded electrical-current.. thus it is where you touch, and then however deep it goes (if disconnected ie insulated, no matter how close to ‘the ground’ or how far.. not connected).

    The most related might be the chi-chi field (the “bio-electric field” of the planet.. like the “energy-ball” sensation.. which radiates from skin.. and if two overlap, they reinforce and thus reach farther.. ie if you feel how far it reaches from each hand/arm.. then bring your hands closer until you feel the two ‘fields’ connect.. tune into that overlap, and you may sense your field “more” (whether just more aware, or does it actually increase, and thus reach farther than it did?)… ~ likewise, if feel your “field” and the “Field” on ‘the ground’.. overlap? (then the quesiton- how far does that chi-field of the planet reach up? an inch, a few feet? -is it stronger “deeper”? or is it weaker “deeper” (per insulation).. –note: how the mountain-tops were famed places to meditate and/or to practice absorbing E…
    ===
    Key being- compare and feel (what is “possible” and what works for you, because you “know” it and can thus realize it, that is the issue)- if you stand higher or lower… what do you sense (this is tricky to separate and see beyond-beneath subcon-assumptions… what is so, vs what is your system-programmed and telling you is so?

    –like looking out a window to see the weather outside, but you ask someone next-to-you.. is it sunny outside? and they have to tell you.. they ask if you can see? non-compute.. just like look-see, and yet we ask our “brain”.. and it tells us.. [I know many would say this isn’t them, doesn’t apply to them, just wanted answer to question.. but as Bruce has taught “belief” (and the related layer of preconceptions) is an energy-field.. and actual-layer-coating.. feel and recognize that? -then can sense-interact-with directly…

    (some other posts that were in regards to “up-down” sinking/dissolving, what if arms raised or lowered.. related to actual-feel experience, vs the visualized-image preconceptions-interp.. a similar dynamic.. need to actually feel what you can do, and what you are doing.. say what is “your field” and what does it “connect to”, as experience (not as belief) and then stretch that a bit (what is going on without reaching, and then reach a bit- ie if just stand/sit where you at- this second.. can you feel ___? then retain that feeling, and try and connect to.. ___ xyz. This requires at least a bit to be distinct and concrete, if it is vague-unclear what is being done/how.. get garbled.)

    < in short, chi-gung 'can' be done in an airplane (above the clouds), or on a boat.. (out at sea.. if it isn't a small-boat, but larger, like a cruise ship.. very rarely is one on the "bottom" so not only on water, but on a floor-above, or many floors up from bottom… but "can" it be done -the trick is connecting is connecting (just like can you touch, and feel, connection with another person? first, are they in reach? too far away? -but even if you can reach, do they or you miss contact (they move away, or you just don't reach out)? – even if you do reach out and connect- if you can't feel that connection (not aware of it?), and/or if you can't sustain that contact (get it-lose it….) '
    so 2 aspects to way(s) to mitigate the loss of contact.. method and skill: (the first is what it is you are doing, Bruce’s instructions might be a good basis to start with, and then develop as you gain exper.) the second, skill, then being to note- do I or don’t I have contact? and then sustain-deeper or lose, etc (and they can change and alter and do with it)

    [ a one-line response might have seemed to answer it easier, but it wouldn’t really answer the question- in my opinion and exper- otherwise it doesn’t give a map or hints of where to go next. ] What does above lead you to experience and feel? -good luck in your practice

    Greetings,
    At the risk of impertinence, I f I may I would suggest you feel the earth through the deck, its connection to the ground. You’ll be fine.

    First, let me thank you, belatedly, for your effort in providing this very comprehensive answer. I think, like most activity in the the realm of Qi, most aspects are difficult to express in simply language. The words simply do not exist, in any language. Even the Chinese speak in metaphors that cannot be understood outside of actual experience. Ultimately, Qi must be experience to be truly understood. Your words are encouraging, though. I will say, at my current level, I feel no discernible difference standing on the deck or balcony and standing on the ground, in bare feet. I think that as I progress and become more sensitive to Qi, a more direct connection with the earth may provide a greater exchange with earth energy.

    Ray, thank you for your direct, simple reply. At an early stage of practice, sometimes a simple “yes” or “no” answer is best, as a longer explanation could be incomprehensible or misunderstood by some. It is certainly in keeping with Asian teaching methods, i.e., no value telling students things they are not ready to understand.
