I sometimes do Gods Playing in the Clouds immediately following three repetitions of the Wu short form. I have not noticed any adverse effects, but wonder if the benefits of either may be diminished by doing the two routines in tandem. Please advise. Thank you.

    Hi Blair,

On the contrary, I think you can learn a lot from practicing sets back to back.

Often, the advice is to start with the simpler movement patterns and work towards the more complex, so Gods then Tai Chi, or sitting then Gods, or, in the standard Energy Gates progression, Standing then Cloud Hands and Swings.

By sequencing the sets, you can build momentum and find things inside the second set you wouldn’t normally feel if you had practiced it on its own.

Have you noticed anything like that?

I have not noticed any enhancement, but that may be because I have been doing the more complex tai chi before Gods. I will try it the other way around and see if I notice a difference in what I feel.

The sequencing of different practices is something I was unaware of and very helpful. Thanks.

……I find Gods a useful complement to form practice. As a preparatory exercise before Tai Chi, ‘movement’ level Gods can help tune in to fundamental complementary pairings such as ‘bend and stretch’, ‘opening and closing’, ‘centre to periphery’, ‘upward and downward’, etc. After Tai Chi, Gods can help consolidate circularity and sphericity depending on your level. It can also help settle your chi, especially if you want to practice standing or sitting afterwards.
