What is the difference in Tai Chi, such as this and what is taught at some YMCAS and health clubs, and the Combative and self defense style of Tai Chi?

Two related aspects to this- ‘not’ a distinction between health or “combative” (warning-signal of someone uses that term, that a make-shift bait-switch)..
the “power” of the int’l arts depends upon the “nei-gong components” (ie the actual “classical” technique/details)..
many systems/writers out there don’t have it, but want to show ‘something’ so force, using efficient structure and jolting movements (all external, and in “Kung-Fu” systems).. while what makes one both rehab/healthier and then further ‘stronger” (whether in vibrant health, high-sports perf, high-perf mental/intell, or in “martial arts” .. all part of the same “powered-up system”) —

As Bruce F. has said, it is like Whiskey in a bottle.. 100proof is the pure-stuff, if it is handed down.. If it is “watered-down”.. let alone a different (lower-cost?) stuff poured into a fancier bottle (wolf-in sheep’s clothing)..
the bottle can look nice, but it is the “stuff inside”.. or the more modern example: either a “wallet” – what is in it? a few dollars, a big wad-of cash, or no-limit cards…? same wallet, it is what the leverage/power of the contents…
Last example: a computer (whether a laptop, desktop, or even mobile.. the outer case can change or stay the same.. what OS, apps, and data is on it? update the firmware, and “know how to use it” so that is of use to you (~’empowering wetware’)..

issue of a Counterfeit or ~Knock-Off with a label of the “RealStuff”.. and if you get 20% of the original technology.. that may cover most uses.. but it is missing 80%.. and if that ‘partial’ is taught to the “next-gen” as 100%…

    **
(but to flip all the above on its head.. the prerequisites need to build a solid foundation: even gaining the skill to see another person do some “moves” and then be able to do-those-moves yourself.. whether gained in MartialArts, or dance, or just practice in mirroring/choreography… that is a skill not many have
-able to stand and feel and keep sensing without immediately shut-down (or nervous-system overwhelm) is built up overtime as well.. so if you get even vague learning of the movements, is like getting a bottle, wallet or computer-case.. and then you can put components into it later.. (vs being given the best “liquid” but having no bottle to contain it..
    — not have a computer to run the program, even if it isn’t the top-of the line, or even current.. just learn “how it works” what the GUI looks like, what the options/cmds are..

how does that add to your understanding(s) of the past? what’s your exper been?

    Hi Brandt,

it really depends on what the teacher knows and what they can teach. There’s a lot of very low level Tai Chi taught in the west that misses most of the internal mechanics that make it work (i.e. the Neigong – http://www.energyarts.com/sixteen-neigong). All traditional Tai Chi forms originated as martial arts but over time people have become more interested in the health benefits so it’s rare to find high quality martial Tai Chi these days and, let’s face it, very few people have what it takes to become a fighter. The forms themselves have also become watered down over time as teachers have died without passing on all they know.

Bruce teaches all aspects of Tai Chi from health to martial arts to meditation and is a master of all of them. He has students interested in all aspects of the art and has certified many skilled teachers.

If you are looking for a class then you want to find the best teacher you can for your needs – martial, health etc. Find out who they learned from, look at their students to see if they can pass the skills on.

    Best wishes

    Trevor
