I’ve taken a few workshops with Bruce and studied many years with teachers he trained. I was often instructed to avoid visualization. I’ve spent about 2 weeks now on Week 4 of the first month, and still am unable to concentrate on the various parts of the head without actually visualizing them, as if I were standing to the side of myself, looking at the part on which I’m focused. Any suggestions about how to move deeper into more “feeling”and less “seeing” of these areas?

Maybe try focusing on sensations from the particular part of the body such as pulsing of blood or chi in the area or warmth.
At some point Bruce suggests moving, flexing or wiggling ever-so-slightly each area if you are having troubles “feeling” them.
    Hope this helps.

Hi, Holly. I agree with what Kevin said about the movements. If you can create some movement and focus on the sensations the movements create, that can be a good start.

Also if the need to visualize doesn’t decrease naturally with that method, it usually isn’t a good idea to force anything in meditation. So maybe if you can use the visualization as a sort of bridge to eventually bring you to feeling the sensations. Have the intention that the visualization is temporary, and try not to get so ‘caught up’ in the image in your head that you won’t notice the subtle sensations that should eventually start to show with practice. I think if you stick with it, the experience of feeling your head will emerge eventually!

…..hi all, I agree with Kevin and Catherine’s comments, and would add that developing sensitivity in your internal nerves is the key to feeling inside your body. In addition to making ‘feelable’ additional movements with the various blocks of body you’d like to be able to feel, the other easy movements to feel and connect with are the breath (air moving in the nostrils, nasal cavities, throat, airways in the chest and associated movement below the diaphragm, and eventually more subtle movement associated with the breath throughout your body). As you gradually tune in to feeling sensations associated with your breath you’ll find you become more sensitive and feel allsorts of interesting sensations throughout you inner landscape. Hope this helps!

    Hi, Holly. Two things:
First, you can try breathing into the area you’re trying to feel. It takes some time to develop this sensitivity, but it can make the feelings more concrete.
Second, avoid having any expectation about what you should be feeling. I found that to be a big barrier, personally, when working with a lot of the things Bruce teaches. If you give up assumptions and expectations, then you will be much more open to feeling what’s really happening.
It’s taken me a long time to get these things happening for myself. I found Bruce’s Taoist Breathing recordings really useful in general as a basis for almost everything he teaches.
    Good luck!
