As a counterpart to my post about the sensation of Peng, I’d like to share my thoughts about An.

Bruce mentions that the sensation is like that of pressing against the ground to lift oneself up.
But I had trouble extrapolating from that image to what the sensation might be throughout the wole body once one is standing up and doing things more freely with one’s arms. Or in San Ti, when the arms ar not pressing low to the sides but extended in front of the body. And how to express that energy in a way that could be both relaxed and powerful?

I was a bit at a loss about this. Until I played basketball with my kids tonight.
Bouncing a ball on the ground is a downward action whch does require some power, but also maximum relaxation. It’s very dynamic, involves the whole body’s motion, and is done with arms extended to the front or the side of the body like in San Ti.

Is that the sensation of An?

    Hi Erwan,
It’s very enjoyable and rewarding to discover things about natures forces in the ways that you have described here, but I don’t know if this is the best way to understand An Force. This is Pushing Force, so the way Bruce descirbes in the video seems the quickest way to get it. You can also experience An Force when mowing the lawn. The way you push against the lawn mower with your arms out slightly bent and feeling the gereration of the push come from your feet to generate the power at your hand – that is Push or An Force. You can also gain the same experience from pushing a car.
    Keep discovering,
    Steve

    Hi erwin

my take on this whole thing is not so much to look for existing experiences that are similar to the sensation of peng, or an, or whatever, but rather to have the opportunity to feel what it actually is.

for this, getting bruce to kick your ass a bit, or anyone who really gets it, is a great method,

many teachers have said the best way to understand the internal energies is to receive them.

another very good way is to practice marriage of heaven and earth chi gung, and really get your opening and closing together. It has been said that without kai/he (opening/closing) there is no taiji. MHE is tailored to getting the energy going, then you can take that skill into your taiji practice. if I understand it rightly, that’s how the energy arts system functions; each chi gung set is designed to help you understand an element of the nei gung, then you can take that into whatever art you want’; bagua, taiji, Tui-Na, sexual chi gung, whatever.

there are many traditional stories from china and asia where this person is desperately looking for something, but he doesn’t really know what it is, so he gets sidetracked trying to figure out something he needs to experience first.

a zen man once put it to me this way; if you haven’t eaten an orange, it’s gonna be very difficult or impossible to describe it to you.
“is it like an apple?” “no”
    “how about a lemon?” “No”
    and so on.

    he who tastes knows.

and that’s one of the things about bruce; he was trained to help people feel these sensations, it’s a part of his special skill set that makes him such a good teacher. he can help you taste the orange…

bruce has also said; man, if you could all just sit quietly and feel what’s going on, you could learn so much so quickly, the words often do more to get in the way than anything.

Ive tried to take that to heart, and it’s been a key source of my developing skill as a chi gung tui na therapist, as well as my martial arts skill and my slowly evolving meditation practice…

or another bruce put it well.
“SMACK!!! Don’t think, FEEL!, it is like a finger pointing to the moon. focus on the finger, and you will miss the heavenly glories!”

hope this helps, and best of training…

An is simple. It’s the feeling of pushing yourself up by pushing on the arms of your chair.
