Taoist believe that the way babies breathe, from the belly, is more efficient, and most people as they age breathe shallow breaths from their chests which makes them less healthy and have less energy.

But why do people pick up poor breathing patterns as they grow up?

Two common causes of poor breathing patterns that are often interrelated are emotional tensions and poor posture. People stoop or become round shouldered or have a caved-in chest for reasons that range from sitting too much, taking inadequate physical exercise or having tenencies to low self-esteem, anxiety or depression, all of which are common in young people in the UK. Being physically tense causes the muscles in the chest to be in a state of permanent mild contraction, whcih reduces lung expansion and lung volume. Lung volume shrinks with age and is one of the main predictors of mortality

i can only talk from my own experience. living with pain which gradually became chronic taught me many valuable things:
listening to, and feeling my body and an ability to recognize where the pain is coming from (even if is was emotional…). but this is a very slow and time consuming process.

i discovered, that essentially everything starts with muscle tension caused by stress. Meaning not only physical, but also mental, and/or emotional stress. Stress has many variations and levels, from a healthy stress to very extreme unhealthy, which can affect us and scar us for life.

Depending on our personal history of stresses and untreated traumas caused by stresses (or surgeries and/or different medical treatments) throughout our lifetimes, our lifestyle and also nutrition, we learn to breath certain way…

FEAR, and especially “existential fear” is very damaging to our health, and unfortunately is not recognized by AMA as life threatening and pivotal beginning of most diseases. It also changes our ability to think creatively and act independently. When in a fearful mode, we are very easily manipulated, brainwashed, used, and abused….

That is why meditation is so powerful, overwhelming and healing.
